My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Meet Figgy Pudding! This sensitive sweetheart of a chihuahua mix came into the Shelter as a stray along with some “friends”. A good Samaritan found him at the Watsonville Levee and coherced him to safety with some stinky hot-dogs. At the Shelter, Figgy was shy, avoidant and really overwhelmed but always made good choices (moving away and watching the world go by from a distance). Two dedicated foster parents opened up their home and have been observing his behavior for a little over three weeks. He has come a long way but will probably be more of the “wallflower” type of companion than a “social butterfly”.

A key to Figgy’s growth in foster has been having a canine in the home. He tends to follow his resident canine foster pups around – looking to see how they interact with the world and people around them. Because of this, he is required to go to a home with a pup.

After about a week and a half, Figgy started to enjoy being pet by two individuals in his current foster home that have become part of his circle. He is learning new people are no so scary by having people offer him little treats when they come by.

Figgy has even started to dog – enjoying his toy, ripping them up and even playing with a ball with his foster parents.

In new environments and with new people, Figgy has been been skittish and ultimately tends to retreat to safety (a crate and/or a familiar environment). With time, patience and the right guardian – we anticipate that FP’s world will become a little less scary and he will be someone’s BFF.

Please note: Our Santa Cruz location’s Shelter hours are 11-6pm, 7 days a week! Although clients can walk through and see any animals in their kennels during open hours, we end “meet and greets” (aka meeting an animal out of the kennel) at 4:30pm every day. If you’d like to meet an animal out of the kennel, please arrive before 4:00pm to allow for time to discuss individual animals and meet them.
