Meet Big Red !!
This sweet girl has had it rough. She’s taken it all in stride and remained the happiest and friendliest dog throughout it all.
We took her and her 7 puppies in from a shelter. She was extremely thin and appeared to have lived outside her whole life. Despite being starved she was a fantastic mom to the pups. When she went to her spay appointment they found she had pyometra (an infection in unspayed dogs.)Thankfully it was caught in time and she is recovering well.
Big Red is approx 2 years old. She is a hound mix. She weighs 35 pounds and is close to full grown. She came to us very skinny and is still regaining her weight so she may gain a bit more.
She has been given several sets of vaccines, dewormed, microchipped and spayed. She is sadly heartworm positive but her treatment for it has been started and is included in her adoption.
She loves other dogs of all sizes and ages. She also loves kids and is very gentle with them. She has not been fostered with cats so we are not sure how she would do. She is a gentle soul and never had any issues with other animals or people around her puppies. She has really been such a sweet natured girl.
Big red is good with crate training and great on car rides. She is okay on a leash but definitely needs additional training with it. She is new to learning all the indoor life skills but so far she is learning so quickly. When she first arrived she was jumping up on kitchen counters etc. She has learned so many manners in just a short time and is becoming a very easy dog to have around.
She is working on her potty training. She’s doing really well considering all she’s been going through. With her being sick, feeding puppies, and us giving her round the clock food for her weight gain, she struggled a bit. Now that she’s eating regular meals and no longer has the infection she is doing way better. She may still have accidents but she is learning.
Big Red so far has a medium energy level. She is mostly laid back and relaxed. She does enjoy to run around the yard with the other dogs and play but is not extremely energetic. She may become more energetic once she fully recovers from everything.
She will jump a short fence. She will either need a 6ft fence or have someone dedicated to exercising and taking her out on a leash. If you are outside with her she rarely will jump it and responds well to verbal correction when you see her thinking about going over it. Having a safe fenced place for her to run would be ideal.
Big Red really enjoys toys. We are not sure if she has ever had them prior to coming to us but she is head over heals in love with them now. She currently is unwilling to share her toys with other dogs once she has them. She does not like other dogs trying to take them. This may pass with time or it may not. She has not had any trouble sharing her food or treats with humans or other dogs. She has no trouble sharing her toys with people.
If you’re looking for an all-around awesome family dog then Big Red may be the one! She is looking for a family to continue her training and give her the loving indoor home she always deserved.
