Here's what the humans have to say about me:
Introducing Barrymore (born 11/2/2016), a gentle, loving, 24 pound, Terrier mixed with Bichon and Poodle - abandoned in Brooklyn and brought to the Humane Society of New York for adoption by the NYPD.
When Barrymore arrived, he needed help. He was clearly disoriented. Covered in dirt and soot, bone-thin and trembling. No identification of any kind. Because his body was so frail, the staff got him a special new orthopedic bed to rest on. The poor little fellow was exhausted. In minutes he was sound asleep. The next day we gave him a complete medical workup. Our doctors placed him at around 8 years old. He was severely dehydrated and malnourished, so much so his ribs were sticking out. Although he has some vision, his eyes are cloudy and his hearing is diminished.
Barrymore’s appearance led us to believe that he probably had been living outside for a long while. It was obvious by his foot pads and toenails that he had been standing on hard cement. He had a bad ear infection. His coat was matted in hardened clumps, pulling at and irritating his skin. The team settled him in and our doctors, vet techs and animal caregivers gave him much needed medical care, good nutrition and lots of love. When he was built up, we neutered him and removed many benign cysts from his neck and back. Our surgeon also repaired what was obviously a prior injury to a lower eyelid. It was torn in half and we didn’t want the tear to get larger and possibly infected.
Barrymore remained good-natured even after all his surgeries and having to wear an e-collar. We are happy to see his confidence and stamina has grown. He gently wags his tail and likes meeting people. He has been fitted with a proper harness and leash and looks forward to his many daily walks or running around on the HSNY rooftop dog run with the other dogs.
We are glad that he is safely off the streets and honored that we could care for him. Barrymore is so trusting and vulnerable. We’ll never know what his life was before he came to us. It has taken time to build him up, but he is ready to go a home where he can be lovingly cared for the rest of his life.
