My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Miss Ebony Spitfire is a chatty house panther who is looking for a forever home where she can rule benevolently.

This almost 2-year-old kitty with amber eyes knows she is a quality cat and does not want to compromise. She is looking forward to being the only cat in the home and telling her human what to do on a daily basis. She loves to play with string and wand toys, has happy kneading paws as she purrs, and likes to nap in a lap or close to a person.

Ebony came from an outdoor cat colony that had grown to 40+ cats. We started helping care for these cats back in August, when we learned the person living in the home was in the hospital and many of the cats needed food and veterinary care. We slowly built trust with them and began to place some in to foster homes.

Ebony had a litter of kittens in August and was motivated to befriend us to enjoy the calorie-rich food and snacks we provided. Once her kittens were placed in foster homes in September, she began to regularly greet us at the site and would eventually jump in laps and demand affection. This lady has a distinctive point of view and is not shy about sharing her opinions!

In early December, we discovered Ebony had been attacked at the colony and had puncture wounds in her neck. We brought her to the emergency vet for treatment. She has healed incredibly well, and fur is starting to cover the area that was treated. This tough, beautiful girl is a survivor and now seems very happy to be spoiled rotten as an indoor cat for the rest of her days. She currently lives solo in a bathroom, with wand toys and cushy surfaces to nap on.

Ebony Spitfire would make a wonderful pet in an adults-only home or one with gentle, older children (12+) as well. She is still learning how to play with people and can nibble when she is deeply engaged in play or overstimulated. As she settles in to her new life, she is doing so less and less, gradually learning to read our body language.

She would appreciate a human(s) who can give her time and patience to figure out the house rules. She would prefer not to share space with other pets (she is very selective about other cats and has not met any dogs yet). In time she may be open to a mellow cat or a kitten friend, but not yet—this lady needs time to rest, relax, and gain more confidence in her surroundings. Ebony eats wet and dry food, always uses the litterbox, and has received all her vetting.

This lovely gal is so ready to enjoy the peaceful, warm, and cozy indoor life with attentive humans and a comfortable home to call her own. Could that be with you?

Additional adoption info

Pet Haven is a foster-based rescue. Our animals live with foster families until they are placed in permanent homes and their foster families get to know the dogs and cats learning important information about the animals. For example, the foster family will know if the dog or cat is good with other animals or children, and will have a good idea of what kind of training, attention, and special needs the pet may require. This makes our foster families great resources for potential adopters!

More about this rescue

Our Mission
Pet Haven improves the lives of pets and the people who love them by rescuing, rehabilitating, and rehoming dogs and cats; reducing pet overpopulation by supporting spay and neuter efforts, and providing resources to people that help strengthen the human-animal bond.

Our Vision
A Minnesota where all pets live in safe, loving homes.

Our Values
Excellence in service and care; community; integrity; innovation; perseverance; compassion; a rewarding place to volunteer

How We Help
Spay/Neuter Initiative Program: Providing support to end pet overpopulation in Minnesota
Owner Surrender: Providing a safe haven for pet owners
Foster: Committed to finding forever homes for cats and dogs
Phoenix Fund for Special Needs: Providing veterinary care for animals in need of healing
What We Do
We help dogs and cats find homes with loving families through foster-based care. Every dog and cat lives with a foster family until they find their forever families. We provide all of their basic needs including proper food, veterinary care, behavior training, and supplies.

Through in-home fostering, we learn about each animal’s temperament, personality, likes/dislikes, and any medical needs. With this first-hand information, we can then find the right family for each dog and cat.

Our volunteers also educate the public on responsible companion animal care and represent respect for animals at all times. Whether we’re working with prospective new families, meeting people at public events, or socializing with friends and family, we encourage others to view and treat their pets as members of the family. We are their guardians, and they depend on us for companionship and care.

We spay/neuter prior to adoption.
We microchip all our Pet Haven Pets and remain as a secondary contact.
We make sure all pets are up to date on required vaccinations
We test for Heartworm and Lymes in all our dogs and are transparent in the results and treament
We test for FeLV/FIV and are transparent in the results. We believe that cats who test positive still deserve a chance at a quality home.
We do not euthanize animals unless they have untreatable health or behavioral conditions that deny them an acceptable quality of life or makes them a serious threat to people, other animals, or themselves.
How We Operate
We rely on adoption fees, tax-deductible donations, grants, and special events to keep our rescue operating. Our staff, Board of Directors, and volunteers have provided the passion and commitment to keep Pet Haven a safe haven for animals for almost 70 years.

We are committed to preventing pet homelessness through the SNIP Grant. Since 2005, we have granted more than $240,000 to organizations in Minnesota to support spay/neuter initiatives.
