Here's what the humans have to say about me:
Meet Shelby – The Sweet and Playful Pup Ready for His Forever Home!
Shelby is a 9-week-old mix breed puppy with a stunning sable coat and captivating eyes that look almost too perfect to be real—but they are! Weighing 13 pounds, Shelby is ready to bring joy and energy to a loving family.
Shelby’s Journey:
Born on Halloween, Shelby and his siblings had a challenging start to life. Their young mom, a stray in Texas, struggled to care for her pups while scavenging for scraps to survive. Thankfully, a kind-hearted rescuer brought the family to a shelter, and Safe Haven arranged for them to travel to Illinois at just nine days old. After 8 weeks of care in a nurturing foster home, Shelby is now ready to find a family of his own.
About Shelby:
Shelby is the perfect combination of playful energy and laid-back affection. He loves romping around during playtime and has already started to learn fetch, showing promise as a future “outfielder”! When it’s time to relax, he’s just as happy curling up in your lap for a cozy nap or finding a quiet spot to rest on his own.
Like any young puppy, Shelby is still learning the ropes of house manners. He’s started using pee pads but isn’t fully potty trained yet. Crate and leash training are also works in progress.
Socialization and Personality:
Shelby hasn’t met a stranger yet—his friendly nature makes him a hit with everyone he meets. He’s been well-socialized in his foster home, living with three other dogs of various sizes and ages, and he loves playing and learning from them. Shelby is gentle in his interactions, making him a great fit for families with kids.
The Perfect Home for Shelby:
Shelby would thrive in a home where he has plenty of companionship, whether from kids, adults, or another dog. He’s an adaptable pup who enjoys both active playtime and quiet moments. At 9 weeks old and 13 pounds, Shelby is expected to grow into a large-sized dog, making him a great fit for families or couples with room in their hearts and homes for a lovable, energetic companion.
If Shelby sounds like the perfect addition to your family, don’t wait—send in your application to Safe Haven today. Puppies as sweet and charming as Shelby won’t be available for long!
A Quick Reminder:
Puppies require time, patience, and care as they grow and learn. With positive reinforcement and consistency, Shelby will blossom into a loyal, well-adjusted member of your family.

More about this rescue
We are a small 501 C3 nonprofit rescue located in Elburn, Illinois. In 2014, Safe Haven Dog Rescue became its own non-profit. We are licensed by the Illinois Agriculture Department.
The majority of our dogs and puppies are pulled from Kill Pounds and Shelters in Tennessee, Arkansas, and Illinois. We also accept local medical cases as often as our finances will allow.
Please take a few moments to read the stories about the dogs and puppies we have available for adoption. We disclose everything we know about the dogs, sometimes we know a lot often we know only that they were strays, thrown away on the side of the road, in the woods, or found in abandoned houses.
While we don’t always know their past we are certain that their future is much brighter.
We hope that you and your family are part of the future…..
