Overview

Meet Asa, a sweet and devoted 12-year-old pup weighing 16 lbs with a handsome tan coat. He came to Little Paws with his sister Ava when their previous owner could no longer care for them, and now they're looking for their perfect retirement home together.

Environment

Like his sister, Asa enjoys moderate activity and does well on walks. While a yard would be nice, it's not essential. He can live in shared spaces but potential neighbors should know he is very enthusiastic about mealtimes and treats, and he's working on his "indoor voice" when excited about dinner. He's typically quiet throughout most of the day, though.

Asa is housetrained but he does best with a consistent schedule to prevent stress-related accidents. He isn't a fan of being picked up, which can be challenging for car rides or stairs. His ideal home would be mindful of this and be patient with his preferences. Asa and Ava share a crate at night, which shows how bonded they are. Like his sister, Asa's more relaxed in the mornings and early afternoons, getting a bit more active in the evenings. Asa can become more vocal and restless in the evenings and is currently taking supplements to support this.

Pets & People

Asa is the ultimate devoted brother - wherever his sister Ava goes, he's right behind her! While initially shy with new people, he takes his cues from Ava and warms up beautifully once he sees she is comfortable. He hasn't been tested with children yet. When it comes to other dogs on walks, he's generally easygoing, though he might join in if his sister starts barking. During more anxious moments, he finds comfort in long-lasting treats, puzzle toys, and of course, his sister's presence.

Location

Asa and his sister Ava are available for adoption from Salem, MA. Their combined adoption fee is $500. Asa settles well in the car once situated in his bed so some travel is ok. Please email fosternorth@littlepawsdr.org with any questions or complete an adoption application at the button above.

Their adoption process

Additional adoption info

6 Step Adoption Process

1) Application - (While we encourage you to let us know on your application if one of our dogs has captured your interest, we use this simply as a guide for matching and your listing of specific dog in no way implies claim to this particular dog)

NOTE: Adoption Applications expire 6 months from the date of receipt. If you have already submitted an Adoption Application and it has been longer than 6 months, you will need to fill out a new Adoption Application.

2) Reference Checks - All references will be checked prior to home visit. We will contact your current vet, if you have one, for a reference.

3) Application Review - Processor reviews the application, calls the vet if you have one, verifies vaccinations and spay/neuter. We email personal references (if email is provided) or call them if necessary. Email is best since as references can respond when they are available.

4) Home Visit - A volunteer will come to your home to visit with you and discuss care of dachshunds. Also, the volunteer will look for any potential problems and check to be sure that your fencing is secure. Your home visit does not mean you have been approved.

5) Approval - After the above steps have been completed all your information will be reviewed and a decision will be made about adoption. If at this point you are approved to adopt, LPDR will help guide you to the appropriate dog for your family.

6) Contract - For the protection of the dogs we place, everyone that adopts a dachshund from LPDR will be required to sign an adoption contract.

Go meet their pets

Are you looking for an opportunity to foster a dachshund? Fostering is our transitional step from a shelter/surrender to a forever home. During this time it’s important that we give each dachshund a safe environment where it can learn to trust again, to heal and to learn how to become a loving family member. Many of the dachshunds that we pull from shelters or receive from an owner surrender just need a temporary home until their new forever home can be found. Please go to our website (www.LittlePawsDR.org) to learn more.

More about this rescue

Little Paws Dachshund Rescue is a foster-based, non-profit animal rescue that specializes in finding permanent homes for dachshunds, dachshund mixes, and other small dogs. It is LPDR’s goal to identify abandoned, mistreated, or homeless dogs and oversee their treatment and well being while working to find loving owners for those in our care. We strive to make the lives of all dogs better through action, advocacy, awareness and education.
