My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Boomer spent 9 years with his previous owner and is now looking for a second chance at love. This handsome senior knows sit, shake, and down, and takes treats gently. While he may feel a little stressed in new situations, like being at our overcrowded shelter, Boomer quickly calms himself and becomes more open to interaction.

Boomer appears to be housebroken and he’s more than ready to bring his years of love and loyalty to a home that will cherish him as he deserves.

Eligible for rescue and adoption. Meet Boomer at ACCT Philly any day of the week from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Behavior notes:

Per Staff 1/4: Boomer is a handsome good boy! When leaving the kennels he pulled some on the leash so using a harness method worked out well. He knows sit and will sit for treats and for you to throw a ball for him. He’ll run after the ball and sometimes pick it up, but didn’t bring it back for me… he would run back to me happily though without it. He is very interested in other dogs and ran along side the fence to see them. He had a short fence meet with another dog and did well. Since it was cold, we couldn’t stay out long and spent our time playing. Later in the day he had a good dog meet. See his videos and photos.

Per staff 1/3: I took Boomer out today and saw the notes from the behavior team that said he is possessive over toys and to use caution. In the yard, he likes to chase the ball but not retrieve it, so I had several balls to toss to him, and never took those he had; I noticed that he always goes back to his ball to check if it’s still there.

He came to me today when I called his name, but didn't stick around for long.

He wasn’t pulling as much on the walk today. I had no issue leashing him or returning him to his kennel.

1/2/25 staff notes:
BEHAVIOR EVALUATION:

KNOWN HISTORY:
Owned

KENNEL PRESENTATION:
Boomer was alert barking when the handler approached and jumped up on the door with wide dilated eyes. When he saw the leash he got off the door and sat. When the handler tried to open the door he tried to push out but then backed up when he realized he could not escape. He allowed for easy leashing and then exited without issue.

LEASH SKILLS:
Pulled moderately, housebroken

HANDLING :
In the room Boomer was stressed. We held him on leash at first due to notes of him being TTA and having minimal info about him at the time. He was pacing a lot on leash and chattering his teeth doing small air snaps while walking around. He calmed down after a few minutes and was able to self calm himself and then was more open to interaction. He approached with low wags and took treats gently when offered. He showed knowledge of sit, shake, and down. He allowed handling without issue in the room and was tolerant of all handling, but was sensitive around his masses.

PLAY:
No interest

TOYS:
Snatchy with toys and would stiffen when approaching slightly but did not outright guard! Allowed trades without issue

Per staff on 1/1: Boomer is an owner surrender who arrived on New Year’s Eve, due to the owner moving. Per the form, he is 9 years old, housetrained, crate trained and lived with cats.

He was a bit difficult to leash b/c he really pushed his body against the door, and once leashed, he was full speed ahead - he pulled hard to get outside but then again, he’s housetrained so I understand his urgency.

I showed him the box of toys in the large yard, and he chased every toy I tossed but did not retrieve them nor did he play with them. Even the balls I tossed, he chased, but didn’t return with any. He looked to be protecting them, so I was cautious around him.

He showed me he knows sit and takes the treats gently. He didn’t come to me for pets, but was comfortable accepting them when I could reach him, but he usually moved away.

He has a beautiful coat, looks to be at a healthy weight, but has a cut on his right eye and a lump on the side of his neck, but I am not sure if the vet staff have determined what it is.

I tossed treats into his kennel when we returned ad he went in with no issues.

Medical notes
12/31/24 medical staff noted: setting to eval due to behavior. He was very stressed during intake exam, panting heavily, very red in the face and kept seeking an exit. Had him set up in tta and starting on gaba
