My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Meet Bruno, a sweet 3-4-year-old male Maltese-Shih Tzu mix with a heart as big as his goofy smile! Weighing 12 pounds, Bruno has a beautiful long coat of brown, white, and gray, and he’s the doting dad to his bonded daughter, Rodent. Together, they make the perfect pair of playful, cuddly companions.

Bruno is a social and affectionate pup who thrives on being close to his people and his daughter. His favorite activities include snuggling on the couch, going for short walks, and proudly parading around with his beloved stuffed toys. He’s a gentle soul who may take a little time to adjust to new surroundings but blossoms into a confident and happy companion once he feels secure.

Bruno is crate-trained, although he barks for a bit when first crated. He’s still working on house training and does fairly well with potty pads indoors, but patience and positive reinforcement will be key to helping him fully master this skill. Due to his previous living situation, Bruno may need extra support to build consistent outdoor potty habits.

He’s done well meeting other dogs on leash during walks but has primarily interacted closely with Rodent in his foster home. He previously lived with cats and is undergoing slow introductions with the foster home’s cats, indicating he could live with feline friends given a gradual introduction. Bruno hasn’t been exposed to children yet but has done well with adults.

Bruno is healthy overall but does have a dermoid on his right eye, a condition involving hair growth from the eye. Surgery to address this is recommended in the next few years, and adopters should be prepared to consult a specialist with an estimated cost of $1-2K.

Bruno would thrive in a calm, loving home with someone who can continue his potty training and support him as he adjusts to new surroundings. He’d do well with another dog, especially his daughter Rodent, and could likely coexist with cats after a slow introduction. While he’s vocal at times, especially when crated or meeting new people, he’s otherwise a quiet and cuddly companion who’s happiest when surrounded by love.

If you’re looking for a sweet, goofy, and loyal dog to join your family, Bruno might just be the perfect fit!

The adoption fee is $450. Adoption fee includes spay/neuter, heartworm/Lyme test, all age-appropriate vaccinations (distemper, rabies, and Bordetella), heartworm and flea/tick preventatives, and microchip implant (including registration). Adoption fees INCLUDE a mandatory sales tax of 7.525%.
Age and breed are based on veterinarian and intake professional’s recommendation and not guaranteed as a rescue animal’s history is often unknown.
Due to post-adoption services provided, we prefer to adopt within a 150-mile radius of the Twin Cities. However, we will consider up to 250 miles if the foster agrees to travel requirements and staff approval.

Additional adoption info

Pet Haven is a foster-based rescue. Our animals live with foster families until they are placed in permanent homes and their foster families get to know the dogs and cats learning important information about the animals. For example, the foster family will know if the dog or cat is good with other animals or children, and will have a good idea of what kind of training, attention, and special needs the pet may require. This makes our foster families great resources for potential adopters!

More about this rescue

Our Mission
Pet Haven improves the lives of pets and the people who love them by rescuing, rehabilitating, and rehoming dogs and cats; reducing pet overpopulation by supporting spay and neuter efforts, and providing resources to people that help strengthen the human-animal bond.

Our Vision
A Minnesota where all pets live in safe, loving homes.

Our Values
Excellence in service and care; community; integrity; innovation; perseverance; compassion; a rewarding place to volunteer

How We Help
Spay/Neuter Initiative Program: Providing support to end pet overpopulation in Minnesota
Owner Surrender: Providing a safe haven for pet owners
Foster: Committed to finding forever homes for cats and dogs
Phoenix Fund for Special Needs: Providing veterinary care for animals in need of healing
What We Do
We help dogs and cats find homes with loving families through foster-based care. Every dog and cat lives with a foster family until they find their forever families. We provide all of their basic needs including proper food, veterinary care, behavior training, and supplies.

Through in-home fostering, we learn about each animal’s temperament, personality, likes/dislikes, and any medical needs. With this first-hand information, we can then find the right family for each dog and cat.

Our volunteers also educate the public on responsible companion animal care and represent respect for animals at all times. Whether we’re working with prospective new families, meeting people at public events, or socializing with friends and family, we encourage others to view and treat their pets as members of the family. We are their guardians, and they depend on us for companionship and care.

We spay/neuter prior to adoption.
We microchip all our Pet Haven Pets and remain as a secondary contact.
We make sure all pets are up to date on required vaccinations
We test for Heartworm and Lymes in all our dogs and are transparent in the results and treament
We test for FeLV/FIV and are transparent in the results. We believe that cats who test positive still deserve a chance at a quality home.
We do not euthanize animals unless they have untreatable health or behavioral conditions that deny them an acceptable quality of life or makes them a serious threat to people, other animals, or themselves.
How We Operate
We rely on adoption fees, tax-deductible donations, grants, and special events to keep our rescue operating. Our staff, Board of Directors, and volunteers have provided the passion and commitment to keep Pet Haven a safe haven for animals for almost 70 years.

We are committed to preventing pet homelessness through the SNIP Grant. Since 2005, we have granted more than $240,000 to organizations in Minnesota to support spay/neuter initiatives.
