My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

SALTY

  • Female, spayed
  • 5 months old
  • German Shepherd
  • 38 lbs.
  • Up to date on core vaccines and takes monthly flea/tick prevention

Salty was found in a neighborhood injured and without any identification.  Her finders searched for her owner, but no one claimed her. She was skinny when found and had a broken leg, but she was very affectionate right away and settled in easily to her foster home. She loves being with people and enjoys spending time outdoors, playing with leaves and chewing on sticks. She loves playing with her toys and since she's a puppy, that means toys that she can chew on. She would probably love playing with other dogs but hasn't been allowed to yet as she's recovering from FHO surgery. Salty is still a young puppy and has started to learn basic commands (sit, stay, paw, etc.) and she is pad trained, but she still has more learning to do. Salty is obsessed with playing with leaves and twigs, and even plays her own version of fetch where she throws the stick to herself and tries to catch it! She has a habit of dropping her toys in her water bowl (oops)! She's a smart girl who recently learned how to figure out puzzles! Her favorite day is spent outdoors, getting to play in a yard, chew on sticks and have some company (being close to her people). Since Salty's FHO surgery in mid-December, she's been busy focusing on regular physical therapy and rebuilding her muscles through weekly walks on a water treadmill. She's making tremendous progress and we expect her to make a full recovery. Despite being found on the street and being injured, Salty is a wonderful dog with a cheerful personality that will make an amazing pet for anyone who chooses to adopt her!

More about this rescue

LOVEPAWS was founded as an animal intake prevention program to help keep pets in homes and out of shelters. To do this, we offer various types of assistance to pet owners including our pet food pantry and our re-homing service. We help find new homes for pets whose owners cannot keep them but do not want to surrender their pet to the shelter. While our focus is on Prince George’s County, MD, we offer these services to the entire DC Metro area.

Our scope and mission has grown quickly since we were founded in 2019 and we now pull dogs and cats from open-admission, high-intake shelters in MD, VA and other Southern states. This has expanded our rescue to be able to save dogs and cats of all breeds. Our expanded mission is to save the lives of abandoned dogs and cats and place them in loving and permanent homes. While we are a non-breed-specific rescue, we are a pittie-friendly rescue that has a soft spot for the pit bulls at the Prince George’s County animal shelter. They face the heartbreaking reality of the county’s pit bull ban which makes them unavailable for adoption to the public. We are committed to stepping forward whenever we can and wherever there is the greatest need.

LOVEPAWS is a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. We are an exclusively foster-based rescue with our foster network spanning MD, DC, and VA.
