Hello everyone! My name is Jack (originally Ken from the Barbie Litter ), and I have quite a story to tell you all. I was born to a feral momma dog in Mexico. Surfers for Strays tried to catch and sterilize her but failed until after we were born. I must say, I'm glad they failed before! Our mom did her best, but our accommodations were modest, to say the least. We grew up in a rundown, dirty shack with nails and broken glass on the ground. This wasn't ideal for raising pups, and sadly, some of our siblings didn't make it. Four of us survived thanks to a local woman who found our hiding spot and called Surfers for Strays for help. Until we moved to the shelter, volunteers came all the time, built a pen for us, brought clean water, lots of food for momma, gave us meds, baths, and oh, so much love. We couldn't help but love them back!
Life completely changed once we got to the shelter. We made new four-legged friends and lots of two-legged ones too! We were trained, loved, cuddled, and just had a great time. One by one, we got adopted and flew to the US and Canada, including me.
Unfortunately, what I thought was my forever home turned out to be only temporary. I started showing signs of hip dysplasia, a diagnosis confirmed by the vet. I was really sad to learn that my new family couldn't go through this hardship with me. I flew back to Mexico to a sweet foster home with lots of other doggies needing special attention! Don't get me wrong, I'm still a total happy-go-lucky pup - I never stop smiling and wagging my tail because I can always look at the bright side of life. Though deep down, I long for a home where I can be assured that forever means forever!
Since returning to Mexico, I've received proper pain medication and when I didn't respond to that anymore, they brought me to a vet to get stemcells injected. It was just a few shots, but they made a big deal out of it, because it's such a new promising treatment! I must say, I understand the hype, because I am completely off pain meds now and I am clearly thriving! I go on an hour long walk every morning and evening and secretly I'd love to walk even longer! Please talk to the team if you need more info on everything medical-related - I'm not a pro at those things!
I'm an absolute master at other things, though, like cuddling, for example. My foster momma says she's never met a cuddlier dog. Even though it's hot as heck here in Mexico, I need. NEED. to touch her when I sleep next to her at night or when she is working. Who cares about the heat when you can cuddle?!
I'm really friendly with all humans and other dogs and get super excited when I meet them on walks or when someone comes to visit at the shelter! New dogs I greet very friendly, I want them to feel at home right away! When you come home, I will not jump up on you, but if you bend down, I'll make sure you'll get all the face licks and if I could, I would merge my body into yours! If you sit with me on the floor or on the couch, I'll make sure I'll flap down right next to you with possibly a toy in my mouth. Cuddles are number one priority! I also love to play and run around with my fellow shelter mates - It is so much fun to have a doggie partner as well and I would love to have a four-legged friend in my new home as well! If not, no worries, I will also be happy with playdates!
My foster momma says I'm very smart and even though I'm not excessively food-driven I understand very quickly what is wanted of me. I honestly just want to be a good boy and make everyone around me happy! I'm very well-behaved alone at home or in my crate. I have my basic manners straight, especially regarding food. Of course, I know Sit, Down, Paw, Turn, and Stay. Sniffing is one of my favorite things to do and I would love to have sniff breaks on my walk or even a snuffle mat at home - this would be fun! I'm also housebroken, obviously!
I think of myself as a really good boy. Ask my foster momma if you need references. I'm trying to live every day with the utmost joy I can find in my heart! I forget everything that doesn't go so well in a heartbeat. Focus on the positive, they say, right? I can proudly say that I've mastered this lifestyle!
One thing is still missing for me to be completely happy... A permanent family! Will you be the one? Please reach out to the Surfers for Strays team if you have any questions. I promise, I'm worth it!
Lots of love, cuddles, and face licks,
Your Jack
