Atticus is a heart-breaker - he's exceptionally sweet and has big sad eyes that will melt your heart. He is very friendly, even with strangers, and loves to give and receive affection. And he is very good and extremely patient with other cats. This poor guy has been through a lot in the first half of his life and he needs an angel to swoop in and give him the home and love that he deserves. We believe Atticus is about 6 years old and was likely a former house pet that was abandoned and found his way into a feral cat colony, where he was trapped and neutered. He later found his way to a good samaritan's front porch, who noticed how sweet and painfully thin he was. So she brought him inside, out of the terrible Texas heat, and contacted SAFCC for help. We found him a foster home and took him to see a vet to have a painful broken tooth removed. It was then we found out that poor Atticus had contracted FIV during his time outside amongst the feral cats. However, FIV is not a death sentence, nor is it a virus that is easily transferred to other cats. The Feline Immunodeficiency Virus is mainly contracted through deep bite wounds from an infected cat, typically caused by fighting - he was probably being picked on by the aggressive feral male cats he came in contact with outside. So he can still live in a home with FIV negative cats if they are all spayed/neutered and have a stable and amiable social environment. What the virus DOES mean for Atticus is that he has a compromised immune system and should be an indoor-only kitty from now on, for his own safety. Cats with FIV can live perfectly normal lives with average life spans but, because the virus attacks his immune system, it leaves him more susceptible to infections. It does not necessarily require any additional expensive veterinary care, just basic common sense and in-home support to keep him safe from infections. So with adequate precautions, awareness, and veterinary guidance, Atticus can still live to a ripe old age. All fosters under the San Antonio Feral Cat Coalition: Community Cat Adoption Program are fostered privately through foster homes. They are spayed/neutered, given age appropriate vaccinations, and microchipped before adoptions are finalized.
