My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

This 2-year-old mutt brightens every room he enters! Nitro is all about his humans, offering endless loyalty, snuggles, and wet kisses. At 55 pounds, he’s still a true lap dog at heart, and will always find a way to settle in close and rest his head in your hands.

Even though he spent six long months at the shelter, Nitro has an unwavering trust in people. He is house-trained and quick to pick up on rules, so he settled into his foster home with ease. For future training, he’s still working on his manners around counters, blankets, and crate training. While he does well when crated if his family is out of the house, he needs time and reassurance to settle in at night. He's making great progress on his confidence and his attachment, so his future family just needs to have patience and consistency in mind. Nitro can be noisy, so he will also require a home without shared walls (no apartments/townhomes).

Originally believed to be a Shepherd/Cattle Dog mix, Nitro has traits of Black Mouth Cur as well. He’s high-energy and thrives on long daily walks and plenty of activity, but he’s equally content to relax indoors as long as he’s near his people. Nitro will require an active home with a securely fenced yard (minimum of 4 feet tall), as his strong nose and curious nature make him prone to wander.

He’s proven to be a social and playful dog, doing well with dogs of all sizes. Nitro’s playful side comes alive when he’s chasing toys or playing games of keep-away with his foster brother, always with a big smile on his face. While he hasn’t been around cats or children yet, his gentle demeanor suggests he could adjust with proper introductions.

Whether you’re heading out for a walk or curling up on the couch, Nitro is ready to be your loyal and loving friend!

The adoption fee is $450. Adoption fee includes spay/neuter, heartworm/Lyme test, all age-appropriate vaccinations (distemper, rabies, and Bordetella), heartworm and flea/tick preventatives, and microchip implant (including registration). Adoption fees INCLUDE a mandatory sales tax of 7.525%. Age and breed are based on veterinarian and intake professional’s recommendation and not guaranteed as a rescue animal’s history is often unknown. Due to post-adoption services provided, we prefer to adopt within a 150-mile radius of the Twin Cities. However, we will consider up to 250 miles if the foster agrees to travel requirements and staff approval.

Additional adoption info

Pet Haven is a foster-based rescue. Our animals live with foster families until they are placed in permanent homes and their foster families get to know the dogs and cats learning important information about the animals. For example, the foster family will know if the dog or cat is good with other animals or children, and will have a good idea of what kind of training, attention, and special needs the pet may require. This makes our foster families great resources for potential adopters!

More about this rescue

Our Mission
Pet Haven improves the lives of pets and the people who love them by rescuing, rehabilitating, and rehoming dogs and cats; reducing pet overpopulation by supporting spay and neuter efforts, and providing resources to people that help strengthen the human-animal bond.

Our Vision
A Minnesota where all pets live in safe, loving homes.

Our Values
Excellence in service and care; community; integrity; innovation; perseverance; compassion; a rewarding place to volunteer

How We Help
Spay/Neuter Initiative Program: Providing support to end pet overpopulation in Minnesota
Owner Surrender: Providing a safe haven for pet owners
Foster: Committed to finding forever homes for cats and dogs
Phoenix Fund for Special Needs: Providing veterinary care for animals in need of healing
What We Do
We help dogs and cats find homes with loving families through foster-based care. Every dog and cat lives with a foster family until they find their forever families. We provide all of their basic needs including proper food, veterinary care, behavior training, and supplies.

Through in-home fostering, we learn about each animal’s temperament, personality, likes/dislikes, and any medical needs. With this first-hand information, we can then find the right family for each dog and cat.

Our volunteers also educate the public on responsible companion animal care and represent respect for animals at all times. Whether we’re working with prospective new families, meeting people at public events, or socializing with friends and family, we encourage others to view and treat their pets as members of the family. We are their guardians, and they depend on us for companionship and care.

We spay/neuter prior to adoption.
We microchip all our Pet Haven Pets and remain as a secondary contact.
We make sure all pets are up to date on required vaccinations
We test for Heartworm and Lymes in all our dogs and are transparent in the results and treament
We test for FeLV/FIV and are transparent in the results. We believe that cats who test positive still deserve a chance at a quality home.
We do not euthanize animals unless they have untreatable health or behavioral conditions that deny them an acceptable quality of life or makes them a serious threat to people, other animals, or themselves.
How We Operate
We rely on adoption fees, tax-deductible donations, grants, and special events to keep our rescue operating. Our staff, Board of Directors, and volunteers have provided the passion and commitment to keep Pet Haven a safe haven for animals for almost 70 years.

We are committed to preventing pet homelessness through the SNIP Grant. Since 2005, we have granted more than $240,000 to organizations in Minnesota to support spay/neuter initiatives.
