Simba was surrendered to us the day after Christmas. His owners had kept him in their yard and as the kids grew older they paid less and less attention to him. Shelter Hope took him to the groomers and gave him quite the makeover!
The neglect Simba endured physically and emotionally has definitely taken a toll on him. We have noticed that he tends to people guard and lash out when he feels cornered. Simba would do best in a home who would be willing to work with him to correct his behavioral issues and give him plenty of exercise.
Be ready to adopt.
Adoptions can happen quickly so be prepared for our call, only apply for dogs that every family member in the home wants, and wait to apply until you return from your vacation. Please fill out our online application and our adoption counselor will reach out to you to discuss meeting your new family member.

The majority of our dogs are in foster care. Most of the time they are only brought in the shop if an application to meet the dog is approved and an appointment is made.
More about our process:
If you're interested in adopting, please fill out a rescue questionnaire. We do not place dogs on a first come first serve basis, but rather to the home best suited for them. Please be thorough in your answers.
If application is approved, we will call you to discuss matching you to your new pet. Then we will set up an appointment. If you decide to adopt, there is an adoption fee and contract.
Please note: If we get an influx of applications for the specific dog you are interested in, you may not get a call from us. We encourage applicants to list several dogs they are interested in.

More about this rescue
We are a volunteer-based pet shop that carries shelter animals available for in-store adoption. Janss Marketplace donates the space to us, we have amazing volunteers, and we pull animals from high-kill shelters, and showcase them in a busy mall environment, where they gain great exposure and find loving new homes.
We have found over 15,000 homes for shelter animals since our opening in November 2011.
SHPS is part of the Shelter Hope Project, which strives to make this the business model for all mall pet shops. We hope to abolish all puppy-mill pet shops, help find homes for the countless pets in our shelters that face being euthanized, and educate the public on how we can ALL help reduce future shelter population.
