Here's what the humans have to say about me:
Pepsi is a fairly small border collie with one blue and one brown eye and prick
ears. He is not a smooth coat, more of a short medium coat. He has very
distinct speckles on his nose and legs. He's a very loving little boy and still
very emotionally needy, tho he is coming around nicely. He currently weighs 36
pounds (he weighed 24 pounds when he came back to us in early July) and stands
about 18" at the shoulder. He will be celebrating his 5th birthday on September
10th.
Pepsi plays well with all our dogs. When my friend picked him up for me he
snarked at her dogs initially (not at all surprising considering what he had
been through), but within hours he was playing with them. He did the same with
2 of our dogs and the next day was completely best friends.
He has done this with a few visiting dogs, but mostly the ones who are bouncing
around and in his face. He has never attacked, just warned "please let me get
to know you". Outside the house he loves to meet new dogs and people but once
he bonds with his humans and house he will need to be introduced slowly and
patiently to new dogs coming in as he still wants all the attention.
Pepsi plays rough 'n tumble border collie play. Our last foster, Cowboy, was
his best friend and they would play for hours with my 6 year olds Sage and
Jasper. Pepsi will also play with my 14 year old and seems to know he can't
play rough with her. I have not started him yet on agility or Flyball but I
think he might be good at both as he is very fast and agile. I have not had him
around water or any situation where he might swim. He has an excellent nose so
he might be good at scent work.
Pepsi is excellent with cats and kids. I have not tested him yet with
livestock. He loves people and loves to be petted. He's been fine in the car,
riding in a mesh crate, tho he needs to be lifted in and still pees before you
put him in, and you should ALWAYS leave the leash on and grab it securely before
he gets out. He's doing very well on the leash, still a bit of a "velcro dog"
but easy on walks. He's now much better being leashed and no longer flattens to
the floor or pees.
Pepsi has had no destructive behaviors at all in the house. He has been left
alone for short periods of time recently with the other dogs and has been fine.
He does occasionally like to pick flowers off plants and pulled a pumpkin plant
out of a tray on the floor of the greenhouse when I left the door open, but just
left it.
He has access to lots of toys and loves to play with his mini soccer ball and
his rope toy with a ball attached. He will chase the tennis ball and bring it
back, however still not directly to me. He's not much of a chewer with the
nylabones but will occasionally take one out of the bone bin for a while.
He's about 90% on the housetraining now. He still has an occasional accident
and has marked a few times behind a visiting male dog (whose owner said was
housetrained). He uses the dog door to go in and out of the yard and likes to
do his business right after eating morning and evening meals. He's having less
and less incidents of submissive urination. This mostly occurs when someone
yells or something is dropped with a bang and he thinks he has done something
wrong.
Pepsi eats morning and evening meals with the other dogs. He is fed last and
knows the place he eats. He's not shown any food aggressions toward me or the
other dogs. I have removed his food mid-meal and he was ok with it. He's still
getting a mid-day meal. He is very eager for his food and does not know sit and
wait yet, but he is now eating more slowly since he's been getting regular meals
and gaining much-needed weight.
Pepsi will roo-roo bark at things outside the fence, otherwise he's been pretty
quiet. He has full hearing and will recall almost immediately to his name and a
whistle now. His recall needs to be followed up with positive reinforcement and
love.
Pepsi is still very very needy for attention but he now understand that the
other dogs need to be petted and loved as well. He has come a HUGE distance in
his trust but he still has a ways to go. He needs love, understanding and very
positive reinforcement, and definitely no yelling, threatening or any indication
that he may be smacked for something.
Pepsi sleeps inside. He loves to cuddle at night on the bed but is getting much
better about sleeping on the big dog beds next to the bed. If something
startles him at night he will want to come up on the bed for reassurance. He
never wants to be very far away from me and if I get up to do something, he
immediately gets up and follows.
He has had no vomiting or diarrhea since he has been with us. He is neutered,
fully vaccinated and de-wormed and is on flea control.
Pepsi has basically been a blank canvas and we've been filling in the picture as
we go, trying to understand the past 4 years, with much more space left to
fill. He's just going to take a lot of work, love, patience and understanding
but he's very trusting and loving and just wants to love.
