My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

This handsome young man is Clifford. He is an amazingly beautiful dog, both inside and out. Clifford has a complicated past that has left him with some anxiety. He wants to be with his person to assure him that all is well in his world. As he is twice abandoned in his short life, we are dedicated to making sure that Clifford finds his forever home this time.

Clifford first came to the shelter as a small puppy with wounds where his mouth had been tied shut. He still retains scars from the abuse - some you see and some you don't. He was adopted as a puppy but was returned to the shelter. Clifford's behavior tells a story of not enough structure and consistency in his life. His anxiety shows in his high-energy reaction to people - jumping and biting at the hem of shirts. He also has some separation anxiety so his perfect home will allow him to spend lots of time with his family. His perfect home will also have only older children over 12 and must be devoted to giving Clifford structure, fun, and consistent reminders of acceptable behaviors. Clifford also needs lots of exercise and lots of toys. He loves toys and snacks and belly rubs are a must! Clifford is great with all people he meets, and has been well-socialized. His foster mom takes him to work each day and he loves visiting with all of her coworkers. Clifford is completely house trained. He is also crate trained, but experiences anxiety when left in the crate so the crate should be away from items he could chew or damage. A toy or Kong may help him to pass the time in his crate more comfortably. If you have the time to invest into Clifford's comfort and routine, he will make the most amazing family member and will reward you with devotion and unconditional love for the rest of his life. Clifford is fostered in Smithfield, VA.
