My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website.

Say hello to Mr. Gus, a dashing black retriever with a heart of gold and energy to spare! This lovable guy has had quite the journey to get here. Like many pups, Mr. Gus had a microchip but no one returned the calls to claim him. Lucky for him (and for us!), he got his big break—a new couch, a new home, and a fresh start.

When Mr. Gus first arrived, he wasn’t in great shape. He was very skinny (less than 26 lbs and he should be between 40 to 45 lbs), and the skin on his belly and legs was in rough condition. But with some TLC and the perfect food that agrees with him, he’s gaining weight like a champ and feeling so much better!

Mr. Gus has earned the nickname "Mr. Wild Child" for a reason—this boy is all about run, play, run, play, and then a little more run and play! He’s also our self-appointed referee, complete with an imaginary whistle he’s not shy about using. He loves calling “fouls” and “traveling” during playtime, so he’d thrive with a doggy buddy who’s patient, playful, and good at guiding him on when it’s time to put the whistle away.

At night, Mr. Gus sleeps soundly in his crate, and during the day, he’s a free-roaming explorer. He had a few oops moments when he first arrived but has improved a lot since then. Slow introductions to new people help him build trust, and he’s blossoming into a confident, affectionate boy who’s learning humans are pretty great.

Mr. Gus truly is a one-of-a-kind gem, and he’s ready to bring his playful spirit and big heart to the perfect forever family. Could that be you?

Their adoption process

Additional adoption info

Our adoption process includes adoption application which can be completed at our website wagsmn.org. Current fees can also be accessed on our website. After reviewing your application, a meeting is scheduled between you and the pet in the foster’s home or a neutral dog friendly place. If there are any resident dogs in your home, it is required that the dogs meet at this time. After the meeting, a home visit is scheduled and, if everything goes well with the visit, the adoption is finalized. A home visit by one of our representatives is required prior to finalizing any adoption, and we must meet all members of the household where the pet will be living sometime during the adoption process. We reserve the right to refuse any applicant for any reason Adoption fee includes: vet exam(s), spay/neuter, de-worming, heartworm test (if 6 months of age or older), vaccinations, microchip, and FIV/FeLv testing (for cats only). Email is the best way to get a fast response (wagswhiskersmn@gmail.com).
