Introducing a shy but sweet, spunky girl, with the cutest ears ever: Peanut! Peanut was found as stray on Dec. 8th, and has been in a foster home transitioning from a neglected dog into a curious, sweet, and playful young dog. Her foster family is a married couple with no kids and 2 cats; they believe that Peanut will do best in a home without children, or much older respectful children because Peanut is timid and sometimes firghtened around people, fast movements and loud noises. She's also very small at less than 10 lbs, and is still learning how to be a pampered pet. Peanut's motto for building trust and confidence is: go slow. Any potential adopters should have a gentle approach, understanding that Peanut may need several days until she's adjusted to a new environment.
Peanut doesn't appear to have lived indoors but she's already adjusted to house noises like microwaves, refrigerator, dishwasher, or TV noises. She appreciates dogs beds and soft blankets, and likes to be where it's warm! As she explores, she frequently seeks out the shelter and safety of her crate (cat sized crate), and she prefers to spend most of her time there. For this reason, it is recommended that her new family be open to using a crate because it will serve as her safe place during the car ride and adjustment to a new home.
Peanut NEVER goes potty in the crate, she's such a clever girl! She will whine to indicate that she has to use the restroom, but she doesn't like to be outside yet. Right now, you have to carry her outside and hang out until she's finished, but she's very quick because she wants to be back inside where it's warm. Peanut's foster family doesn't close her crate door, as they have a smaller area inside with a pet gate blocking access to the rest of the house. The gate is up only at night or if they leave to run errands, and Peanut uses the pee pads at night in her area since her foster family does not have a doggie door. All signs suggest that Peanut could be reliably house-trained, or pee-pad trained depending on her new family's preference.
Peanut is very respectful of the cats in her foster home, which is wise since she's smaller than both cats! Peanut approached cats slowly, and when the cats poofed up or walked away to indicate that they were not interested in meeting, Peanut calmly walked away. She hasn't chased or barked, or otherwise been intrusive toward the cats, even though she wants to be friends so badly! Peanut's foster family hasn't introduced to her to any dogs yet because she is still adjusting to a collar and leash - however, when seeing herself in the floor length mirror, there were several play bows and attempts to "get that other dog" to play! Just adorable, really!
Peanut's foster family think that she'd probably benefit from a furry companion, such as calm and confident dog she could use as a role model. Peanut doesn't seem to be used to human touch, but has recently started to seek out pets and affection. It's possible that a role model dog could help her build trust and enjoyment with humans, and help her learn how to be a pampered pet. Her foster family sees so much potential for her to bond with the right humans who can be gentle and patient while she blossoms into the sweet, spunky, cuddle bug that she's meant to be.Please call the shelter at (706) 795-2868 to schedule a meet and greet.
Madison Oglethorpe Animal Shelter is a non-profit shelter serving over 720 square miles. We are open intake, meaning we can not turn away animals from either county we serve. Our shelter intakes double or triple it's capacity every month so it is essential we place animals quickly into adoptive homes. Since so many animals enter the shelter we often don't have enough volunteers to write an individual bio for each. Please feel free to call the shelter Wednesday-Sunday to inquire about the animal you are interested in. 706-795-2868.
