Behavior Notes:
Per volunteer 1/1/2025: What I would have gave to take this guy home with me! Troy is *ELEVEN* and such a sweet “young” senior

Troy had a note “no handling” so I was cautious taking him out. Once outside he was excited, wiggly and super happy to be with me. He did well meeting a couple dogs (male/female), sought attention from volunteers and walks well on leash. He has great OS notes, lived with children and is in great shape medically. He is super soft!

I did notice once returning inside and hanging out in the volunteer office with several of us he was much more reserved at first. A bit aloof and avoidant of direct interaction but opened up. It seems the shelter environment impacts him to be a bit more shy and reserved. He is house trained and has great kennel presence though!

Troy's Walk Sheet as of December 31st, 2024
Troy was taken for a walk on December 27th, 30th, and 31st. Troy's walk on December 27th was noted to be an 'eval', with no issues or energy level noted, but general notes provided about their demeanor: "nervous, but curious; walks around (dog) run to explore". During Troy's walk on December 30th, moderate issues with shyness were noted, with Troy having a low energy level. It was noted that Troy met Bambi during this interaction, but no notes on the dog meet were listed. Other interaction notes show that Troy is 'avoidant of touch' and that he 'likes cheese'. During Troy's walk on December 31st, mild issues were noted with shyness, and Troy was again found to have a low energy level. Troy was noted to 'take cheese gently' and was 'more interested in sniffing' while on their walk. Further showing Troy's affinity for cheese, it was noted that he will come to his handler for cheese, and has 'no issue, walks nice on leash'.

Per volunteer 12/30: “When I approached the kennel he came to the front and ate treats. He was easy to leash and walked well to the outside area where he promptly peed and pooped. He was avoidant of being too close to me on the leash and of any gestures I made towards him, he would move away. He wasn't eating treats outside. In the eval room he would approach with a low wagging tail to take a treat, he liked cheese the best and would take pepperoni from me but not my volunteer helper. Each attempt I made to touch him, he would move away.
He met Bambi (male) through the fence and then on leash. His tail went up with a loose wag, soft eyes and he was very interested in greeting. When out on the leash together Bambi would approached and he would move away, same as with people. At this time he just doesn't want anyone to touch him. I hope that will change since his background notes indicates he loves to be pet.
He was easy to return to his kennel and remove the leash.”

Per staff 12/27: “Did not allow much handling in the room but has very good owner notes. Hoping with some time and medication he will relax and open up more.”

12/27 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION: Troy
KNOWN HISTORY:
Owner surrender - moving and new place doesn’t allow dogs
KENNEL PRESENTATION:
Troy was at the front with very wide eyes. He started to growl, but the handler said “do you wanna go outside?” and he immediately stopped and began to wag his tail. He was easy to leash and came right out once secured.
LEASH SKILLS:
Pulls moderately, likes to sniff around and pulls to sniff. Got uncomfortable when the handler’s hand was over him.
HANDLING:
Troy was a bit nervous and aloof at first, and just wanted to sniff around the room. He gave some whale eye and tensed up when reached for, so we gave him some time. He wasn’t interested in treats, and head whipped and moved away when we tried to touch him. He perked up and showed interest in a toy, but was too nervous to engage and ran away. He was pretty exit oriented and jumped at the doors and windows trying to find a way out. He did almost come to me when I called him, but did not come within 4 feet of me and retreated to the other side of the room again. Eventually he came up on his own, and finally took a treat! He gave some mid level wags and took it very gently, but retreated again, too nervous to stay near me for long. If I made him wait for a treat he would hard stare and freeze. He still would not let us touch him without trying to get away and head whipping, and continued to try and hop out of the windows in the room. He continuously ran away and would not allow us to handle him, but his owners said he can take some time to warm up to new people. Overall, Troy needs a lot of time and treats to open up. We are hoping with some time and positive interactions that he continues to open up more and more.
PLAY:
Did not attempt
TOYS:
Perked up but too nervous to engage

Per staff 12/27: “hard barking, whale eyes and stiff body”

Per the owner: “Is energetic, usually friendly, he doesnt like thunder/fire works, house dog and sleeps a lot, some people he takes a bit to warm up too, never bit anyone, medium energy. He only has acted aggressive toward another dog who was growling at him. Pulls hard on leash. Okay with children. The way Troy reacts to people and dogs depends on the person / dog. He likes to play and be pet often, he’ll want a lot of attention”

Medical Notes:

Per an exam on 12/27: “Eyes have reddening, cloudy cataracts. Ears are dirty and red. Gums pink and moist, severe tartar, moderate staining. Dandruff, no fleas found, Sores on paws. Bright, alert and responsive.”
