OREO NEEDS A FOREVER HOME!!!!
Name: Oreo Best Guess for Breed: Australian cattle dog/blue heeler mix
Best Guess for Age: 5 years as of October 2024 Gender: Male
Approximate Weight: 32 lbs
Gets Along With: Oreo does well with other dogs and needs to go to a home with a confident, welcoming resident dog due to his shyness. We would be cautious placing him in a home with children under 12 years old because young kids can often scare shy dogs with their level of energy or noise. Children would need to be supervised closely to not leave doors open and should never walk the dog without an adult holding the leash. We would be happy to discuss this more in depth with any applicant.
We haven't seen him with cats, but he can be tested if you have them.
Currently Living At: DC area foster home
Oreo is Looking For: His forever home! He ended up in the shelter due to no fault of his own and he's eager to just have his own humans once again. Long sniffy walks, world exploration and all that good stuff that comes with being a well-loved dog - yes, please! Can you offer that in exchange for this loving boy's adoring gazes and loyal companionship?
What My Foster Says About Me: Oreo is a super sweet dog looking for some human companionship. He is shy at first, but as soon as he warms up to you--you'll know when he offers his paw--he'll be using those dreamy eyes and soft coat to get all the petting and affection he deserves. Give him a corner of the couch to nest in, and he'll be in heaven.
He's tolerant of other dogs as long as they give him just a little space, and is likely to warm up to a resident dog as long as introductions go slow. He hasn't been fully tested with cats, but is co-existing in separate parts of a house just fine and does not seem cat aggressive. He takes loud noises like fireworks and yappy dogs in stride--this is a zen dog in the making. He's taken to house-life well and hasn't shown any destructive tendencies and hasn't had any accidents. Though he tolerates crating just fine, he'd prefer laying on a mat in a sunny spot while his humans hang out nearby. He'd love some grass or woods on his daily walks. He takes direction well and is ripe for some training.
Oreo is ready to bring warmth and joy to a loving home!
Special Adoption Considerations: Oreo is heartworm positive, but this Lucky Dog got extra lucky! This pup is part of a groundbreaking study we are conducting at our South Carolina Rescue Campus that has the potential to change the way shelters across the United States treat heartworm positive dogs. All dogs in the study are placed at random in either the 2 shot or 3 shot protocol with strictly monitored protocols in place. Four weeks following their final injection, the pups are eligible to transport to the DC area for placement in foster or adoptive care. After treatment concludes, we work with adopters to arrange a free follow up heartworm test after 6 months, followed by a second test at 9 months.
We are happy to discuss this treatment and which phase of the study this Lucky Dog is in right now! Just email the adoption coordinator - the address is at lower left!
Additionally, because Oreo is shy, he needs to go to a home with a confident, welcoming resident dog. We would be cautious placing him in a home with children under 12 years old because young kids can often scare shy dogs with their level of energy or noise. Children would need to be supervised closely to not leave doors open and should never walk the dog without an adult holding the leash. We would be happy to discuss this more in depth with any applicant.
Lucky Dog cannot guarantee any dog is housebroken. All of our dogs are working on their crate training.
TO ADOPT: The adoption fee for this dog is $475, which includes the cost of routine vetting, including vaccinations, spay/neuter, and heartworm treatment. If you are interested in adopting, please complete the Adoption Questionnaire online at bit.ly/adoptaluckydog
