My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

ALL our cats and dogs are in the NY area but can be adopted out of state to the purrfect furever home.  In some cases, we can help transport.  Zani's al fresco Summer Adoptions  follow us on FB to find us this summer as we will try new locations to meet the needs of NYC and support the little stores:)

Trischa rescue story:

Trischa was brought to our attention by a local. We fell in love with her adorable face, we decided to help find her a loving home. However, we had no idea what challenges lay ahead. Initially, we thought all she needed was a spay, but this marked the beginning of a rescue journey filled with unexpected surprises.

When Trischa arrived, we discovered she had a TVT tumor, so we promptly enrolled her in chemotherapy at the vet clinic. This treatment lasted a month. During her time there, we noticed she walked slowly and seemed hesitant, which the vet attributed to the side effects of her chemotherapy. After she recovered from the TVT, we decided to have her leg examined, only to find out it had been broken for months and hidden beneath her long fur
After returning to the clinic for leg repair, Trischa  spent several more weeks recovering. Finally, she was able to go home with a foster. However, this was where we encountered our third surprise: Trischa displayed some unusual behaviors. She wouldn’t eat around other dogs, was easily startled, and often bumped into things. We suspected that one of her eyes might be impaired. A visit back to the clinic confirmed our fears—one eye was completely blind, and the other only had 20 percent vision
It’s truly heartbreaking to realize that this little girl spent her life on the streets, struggling to survive against larger dogs, all while being blind, having a broken leg, and dealing with a TVT tumor.

About Trischa.  We name her after blind Olympian Trischa Zorn

Trischa is an incredibly sweet and dainty little girl. Although she may initially seem a bit timid, she quickly warms up to those around her. At first, we thought this was just part of her personality, but after discovering that she is blind, we realized her shyness stems from her inability to see and her confusion in new surroundings. Once she becomes familiar with her environment, she feels relaxed and at ease.
Trischa enjoys playing with other friendly dogs, but it's best to feed her alone and away from them, as she cannot see their body language. She walks well on a leash and loves to snuggle on the couch for cuddles. It might take her a few days to adjust to a new home, but she does have 20 percent vision in one eye, which helps her somewhat—though she still occasionally bumps into things.
She’s a wonderful dog who just needs a little time to adapt, but I assure you, she will settle in beautifully.

All dogs are located in NY/NJ area
All our puppies need puppy play dates/doggy facetime so we recommend homes with other pups or daily interactions to keep them tired out, happy and social.

Dogs are spayed/neutered, UTD on age appropriate vaccines, Rabies vaxed, and microchipped (not Lyme vaxed but we seriously recommend it!)  All are in the NY/NJ area but we will adopt out of state to the purrfect home and in some cases, we can arrange transport.  Please go to our site  https://zanisfurryfriends.org  fill out an application
Many of us (cats/dogs) will be on display on Saturdays or Sundays, weather dependent--please ask by writing us at dogs@zanisfurryfriends.org and following us on FB. If you are seriously interested in adopting one of us in particular, please fill out an application early Friday so that we can be sure to be there. Otherwise we decide based on other variables. Usually we are in our foster homes so this is a bit more stressful and a slightly artificial environment but we do want to be seen and find our furever homes too.

Please consider providing a home for more than one dog, especially if you are considering adopting a puppy. Dogs are pack animals and very much enjoy as well as need other dog company to learn to play, socialize and be good companion animals to people. The upside to this is that you won't feel as guilty leaving them alone and you get twice the love. Please come! And if you can't adopt, maybe you can foster or volunteer, and you can always donate!

If you want to know about cats/dogs specifically being shown at our adoption locations, please email us info@zanisfurryfriends.org closer to the date so we know your interest and will make every effort to have that pet at the event or let you know how and where you can meet.  It is extemely helpful and speeds up adoption if the application is filled out prior to visiting us so please do that before coming to our weekend events. Our weekend locations are: Saturdays or Sundays, weather dependent  Follow us on FB, Zani's Furry Friends ZFF, for latest updates. Usually we are in our foster homes so all this is a bit more stressful but we do want to be seen and find our furever homes. Please come! And if you can't adopt, maybe you can foster or volunteer. And you can always donate:) Cats and Dogs are spayed/neutered, UTD w/ all age appropriate shots and microchipped. Cats are feline combo tested for FIV/FeLV; dogs are heartworm tested and rabies vax'd, (NOT lyme vaxed but we seriously recommend it); rabbits are spayed/neutered. Please fill out an application and email to: For Cats: cats@zanisfurryfriends.org For Dogs: dogs@zanisfurryfriends.org For Rabbits: nyc.acc.rabbits@gmail.com. Please visit our website zanisfurryfriends.org.

Adoption application

Go meet their pets

Zani's furry friends are mostly from the NYC shelter system. Our foster network is located in the NYC area.

Our dogs and cats are wonderful animals who can be placed with families w/ other pets. We foster most of our own adoptees and most are good w/ children and other dogs and cats.

Applicants are screened via an application which can be downloaded from www.zanisfurryfriends.org (hyperlink to applicatoins on home page), then returned to us via email. Potential adopters must come meet the dog/cat at the foster home. All our adoptable furry friends are fully vaccinated, spayed/neutered, microchipped and either feline combo tested or heartworm tested depending on whether the adoptee is a cat or a dog, respectively.

More about this rescue

Zani's Furry Friends is an organization committed to rescuing companion animals from New York City's shelters where, unfortunately, they are at risk for euthanasia due to overcrowding. Each dog or cat rescued from a shelter opens a cage and gives an opportunity to another pet to await a chance for adoption or rescue, thereby potentially saving yet another life.

Although we are not always sure of the pedigree or background of each animal, those we place are generally well socialized family pets who came to the shelter through no fault of their own. We rescue kittens and puppies as well as adult animals who deserve another chance for a loving home. We do not have a shelter or boarding facility, but instead rely upon foster homes to shelter and nurture our furry friends until a loving forever home is found. Our dogs and cats are all up to date with vaccines, and spayed or neutered. Dogs are microchipped and heartworm negative and cats have tested negative for FIV (if old enough) and FeLV. Young kittens must be adopted in pairs or to homes with other cat(s) to ensure the companionship and socialization they require. Adolescent or adult cats may be adopted solo, if appropriate.

Adopters are asked to complete an application and spend time with their prospective companion animals. All adopters are carefully screened via vet and personal references, and a home visit is conducted. A donation in an amount agreeable to all parties is requested to help defray our expenses (medical, transport, training, pet supplies, etc). We are a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, and are always in need of donations. That donation can be in the form of healthy treats, quality pet food, crates, blankets, new leashes and collars, toys, gift certificates to pet supply stores, kitty litter, etc. - all are gratefully accepted!

Please look at our list of adoptables, and if you don't find one that seems right for you, or if you see one that is already flagged as adopted, please contact us at ggmcs@juno.com to let us know what you are looking for; perhaps we can help find the perfect match. We continually rescue new animals and will keep in mind specific requests from good homes.

Zani's Furry Friends is a volunteer organization which receives no funding or sponsorship. We depend on the generosity of those who are willing to donate time, supplies and money--and we are always in need of additional foster homes for either dogs or cats so that we may help free more animals from a dark fate at the shelter. Unfortunately our city's shelters face a continual space problem, and dozens of healthy, adoptable animals lose the race of time daily. If you are interested in opening your home and heart to foster one or more of our rescues, making a donation, or assisting with the myriad of details and chores that is involved in saving these precious lives, please contact us at info@zanisfurryfriends.org for more information. We look forward to working with you.
