Here's what the humans have to say about me:
Ahoy, matey! Meet Jolly Rocker, the one-eyed orange cat with the heart of a true pirate. With a patch over her missing eye and a swagger in her step, she’s a feline who knows how to command the ship (or, in her case, the living room). Though slow to trust newcomers, Jolly's fierce loyalty is hard to miss once she’s given you the seal of approval. With a gaze that could pierce through a storm, she’s quick to judge whether you’re worthy of her pirate crew, but once you’ve earned it, there’s no turning back—she’s yours for life.
Once Jolly Rocker warms up, she’s a force of nature, and her mischievous spirit will steal your heart. She may have the appearance of a seasoned sea captain, but underneath that tough exterior is a playful, attention-loving soul. Her antics, whether it’s swatting at an unsuspecting piece of string or finding new ways to raid the treat stash, are sure to make you laugh. But beware—when you sail into her world, you’ll never want to get into mischief with another cat again. With Jolly by your side, adventure and trouble are always just around the corner, and the high seas will never feel the same!
Meet and greet/adoption appointments are highly recommended to ensure the animal you are interested in is currently at the shelter. Please call or e-mail the shelter to set up an appointment to meet and adopt!
DON'T FORGET! Cats often do better with a friend! All our cats and kittens have an "Adopt one and the 2nd at half the adoption fee!" bonus!!!
Our kitten/cat adoption fees vary on age, special needs, lonely heart status (cats that have been with us 6+ months), and for our senior to seniors program. Our adoption fees include the following: all of our cats/kittens are current on vaccinations (FVRCP series and Rabies if over 3 months of age) at the point of adoption, dewormed, tested for Feline Leukemia (FeLV) and Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV), treated for fleas/ticks/earmites in addition to being spayed or neutered once the cat reaches 2 lbs in weight. All cats and kittens adopted from the shelter are microchipped. Adoption fees may vary in special circumstances.
Because we are on a busy street, we require that all cats leaving the shelter be in a carrier. All pets are up for adoption until an approved application is processed and their adoption fee is paid.

More about this shelter
BRHS formed in 1998 to help the Brookings Animal Control Department find homes for stray animals. The unclaimed, homeless cats and dogs from Animal Control are BRHS' priority. Those unclaimed are transferred to BRHS where they get the necessary wellness care and are spayed/neutered. Animal Control brings any sick or injured animals to BRHS for immediate care.
In 2013 BRHS was very fortunate to move into its present location across from the Brookings Airport. The building was built specifically to house animals and provides a separate dog kennel area, rooms to house cats, natural lighting, and proper ventilation throughout the whole facility. There are also medical isolation, quarantine, treatment, and surgery rooms.
BRHS has been recognized for and has won multiple awards from both city and national organizations, including several Dog Rescue Awards and a nomination for the Governor’s Award.
