Joiya is a beautiful black and tan female approximately 4 years of age. She is underweight at  74 lbs but is quickly filling in with healthy muscle mass. She had a rough start when she

entered our organization, requiring time to recover from severe kennel stress.  You might say she is re-discovering her puppyhood years.

Initially, this girl was confused with the indoor life. Dog beds, stairs, and dog-doors were

daunting. However, with the help of her co-foster, Teddy, she rapidly learned to navigate

household obstacles and even takes liberty to rearrange personal items with mischievous pride!

She is a busy gal, driven by curiosity with any activity that pops up, but she will quickly rest

quietly in the home. Joiya greets all humans with a friendly demeanor but may not hold still very

long for pets and affection. Slowly she is parking herself longer and learning to appreciate these

tender moments with humans, especially when she sees her pack mates melt at the chance for

    family conversations and hugs.

Joiya seems to gravitate to the company of other dogs who seem to give her confidence and

direction. She tries her best to engage them in play, but she can be a bit awkward and a tad

pushy. Supervision is recommended until she understands her play boundaries. Her other co-

foster, Whiskey, has grown into a well-matched playmate where the two often engage in ‘chase

me with the ball’. If no one is game for fun, she will simply entertain herself by romping about

with any available ball or Nyla bone. Joiya enjoys long walks where she has learned to ignore

distractions along the way. She is housebroken and enters her crate on her own where she

sleeps quietly through the night. This is one happy girl who will delight you with a jolly grateful

    spirit.

    Level 2

    Understanding Dog Levels

Please be sure you understand what a dog of this Level requires. Go to our home page for an explanation of the Dog Rating Levels. (https://www.gcgsr.org/dogs.html#levels)

    Additional Adoption Information

For more information and to see when this dog will be attending an Adoption Day, please see our Dogs page on our main website. (https://www.gcgsr.org/adopt_info.html) We operate within a reasonable driving distance from the Greater Sacramento area, the Central Valley down to Merced, and Lake Tahoe. A reasonable driving distance is determined by where one of our volunteers is willing to drive within our areas of service. That means we don't adopt out of our area, to Southern California, or out of state.

    Puppy Requirements

We have special Requirements for Adopting a Puppy and a separate Puppy Questionnaire that must be completed on puppies. Please see our Requirements for Adopting a Puppy (https://www.gcgsr.org/puppies.html) email us at info@gcgsr.org for more information.

    Thank you for visiting!

    Additional adoption info

    Adoption Fees
Our fees are $350 for Puppies (2-6 months), $300 for Adult Dogs, and $100 for Senior Dogs (9 years & up) and Special Needs Dogs who have ongoing health issues that require treatment. All of our dogs are spayed/neutered (per California State Law), vaccinated, heartworm and fecal tested clear, and most are micro-chipped.

    Home Visit
We require a home visit by one of our own volunteers because we match the home to a specific dog, and we want to meet all members of the household and all other pets at that time, and make sure that environment will work for that dog. The home must be safe and suitable for our dog, and that means we won't adopt to a home with out-of-control children or out-of-control resident dogs.

    Outside Dogs
We rarely place dogs in outside only homes. All of our dogs come out of shelters and into volunteer foster homes where they live in the house with the people. We haven't had much success re-homing them to an outside-only home after that. We believe that dogs are happier living and sleeping inside with their family pack, which has been borne out from many years of bringing dogs into rescue.

    Adoption Requirements
Our Adoption Agreement & Contract is a legal document, therefore we will only adopt to adults, and all the adults in the household must agree to getting the dog. The home must be safe and secure, and legally allowed to have a German Shepherd Dog, and be within the allowable number of dogs. We require landlord consent for renters. The entire household must be a good match for the dog, therefore we won't place a higher Level dog in a lower Level household.

    Puppies
We have special requirements and an additional questionnaire for puppies, please be sure you meet the requirements before sending in an application. Since we see so many dogs that have come out of an unsuitable environment, we want to make sure our puppies have the very best start in life. That means we won't adopt a puppy into an Outside Only home or where the puppy will be alone the majority of the time, as we don't feel that's an optimum environment to raise a happy and well-socialized dog.

    More about this rescue

Greater California German Shepherd Rescue is a 501(c)(3) public charity non-profit. We are an all-volunteer group of German Shepherd lovers dedicated to rescuing German Shepherd Dogs from at-risk and unacceptable situations and finding them permanent, loving homes with qualified owners.

We serve the communities surrounding Modesto, Merced, Greater Sacramento, and South Lake Tahoe, and occasionally parts of the North and East SF Bay area. Except for a portion of Nevada around Lake Tahoe, we don't adopt dogs out of state and rarely adopt out of our area. There are too many other German Shepherds in need of good homes in the other areas.

All of our dogs are in foster homes spread throughout our service areas. We aren't a shelter and don't have a facility. We don't take in strays, we will only deal with the dog's legal owner.
