My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Aloha, future family! I’m Kanaloa, an 11-month-old hound mix with the soul of a gentleman and the looks of a doggy heartthrob (if I do say so myself). Seriously, I’ve got the ears, the puppy-dog eyes, and a wagging tail that could melt hearts faster than a Kauai sunset. Here’s the thing about me: I’m a little shy at first. Think of me as that handsome stranger at the party who’s quietly hanging back until someone really special (that’s you!) brings me out of my shell. With a little patience and a lot of love, I’ll warm up faster than you can say “best buddy ever.” Once we click, I’m your guy—your loyal shadow, your cuddle buddy, your partner for life’s big and small adventures. I love snuggles, playtime, and being by your side. Got errands? I’m there. Chilling on the couch? I’m your snuggle pro. Want to explore the great outdoors? Count me in! I’m still learning the ropes (you know, puppy training stuff), but I promise I’m eager to make you proud. Plus, with my hound smarts and your guidance, I’ll be the star pupil in no time. Whether you’re here on this beautiful island or waiting for me on the mainland, I’m ready to pack my bags (and maybe a few treats) to start our forever journey together. So what do you say—are you ready to meet the sweetest, most handsome boy around? Come find me at the Kauai Humane Society. I’ll be the one with the shy smile, gentle heart, and dreams of finding my perfect family. Let’s make it happen! Schedule a meet and greet today or walk in anytime from 12 pm - 4 pm except for Thursdays.

More about this shelter

The Kauai Humane Society was established by the community in 1952 as a local non-profit 501(c)(3) organization to protect Kauai’s animals. We opened our current home just west of Lihue in 2001 thanks to the generous support of many individuals, families, businesses and foundations. We are an independent animal welfare organization and not a chapter of any mainland or Hawaii group.

The Kauai Humane Society(KHS) is the only physical animal shelter in Kauai County, Hawaii. We are a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization with a government contract to allow KHS to provide services to Kauai County for humane field services for cats and dogs.

Our facility does not turn away any sick or injured cat or dog found on Kauai. We strive to not euthanize any healthy, adoptable, and/or treatable animals for space or treatable medical reasons.

In 2022, for the year overall, KHS achieved a Live Release Rate of 94.4%; meaning 94.4% of the animals that came into KHS during 2022 were released with a positive outcome of being adopted, returned to the owner, or transferred to a rescue group.
