My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

** $25 in pledges for the rescue that pulls **

Jett ACCT-A-209380 is currently considered urgent and at risk of euthanasia due to behavioral concerns. Jett  must have confirmed placement with a RESCUE PARTNER or EXPERIENCED ADOPTER by FRIDAY, DECEMBER 27TH at 10AM. Should Jett’s medical or behavioral status change, his urgency and timeline for placement may also change.

Jett arrived at the shelter as a stray on December 17th. He is a high-energy dog who appears to be a husky/shepherd mix, so being in a kennel is quite stressful for him. He can be tense and reactive in his kennel, but outside of it, he’s much more relaxed, though he can still get excited and jumpy at times. Once he trusts you, he’s sweet and loves being close to you. Jett is food-motivated and eager to please, but he needs an experienced adopter who can work with his reactivity and help him feel more comfortable. He would do best in a calm, patient home without children, where he can continue to build trust and confidence. Jett has met other dogs while at the shelter, so if you have one at home, please bring them along for a meet. Due to his behavioral concerns, Jett is urgently seeking placement with a rescue partner or experienced adopter.

BEHAVIOR:
Per staff 12/22: Jett did pretty well for his dog meet, but seemed frustrated and was barking almost nonstop. He was overstimulated, but was able to be redirected. He appears to be a husky/shepherd mix of some kind, so that could be from the husky side of him.

Per staff 11/22: Kinda darty but overall good. Likes running around with you.
Per staff 12/21: Jett got out for some more one on one time today! He was easy to leash in kennel, and waited patiently by the door. While in the eval room he was affectionate and cuddly, spending most of his time in the main handler's lap. He allowed all handling with no issues and was just happy to be out and hanging out with his buddies! Another person came into the room and Jett did his Shepard thing; posturing with a high tail and growling at her. We held onto the leash and he did not want to approach her, so she left the room quickly so she didn't stress him out. While he may not present the best in kennel, and is suspicious of strangers, when Jett warms up and trusts you he is a very sweet, affectionate boy!

Per staff 12/20: Jett got out for some one on one time today! He was much more calm for leashing today. He was sitting at the front with wide eyes. When he saw the leash he stood up with a high tail and raised hackles, but was easy to leash and came right out. He walked nicely to the eval room and gave me some loose mid level wags. He was much more loose and comfortable in the eval room with us today. He solicited a lot and would rub his body against us for pets. He had a couple moments where he jumped up int he handler's face and froze, but did not escalate and got down. His hackles would raise when he smelled something on the handler, so he may have been getting sexually aroused. He got a little playful and lightly mouthed at hands. He chased a squeaky toy but didn't want to bring it back. He continued to solicit and lean in and allowed all handling from ears to paws. Overall, Jett seems to be opening up a lot, and while he can still be a little tense and reactive in kennel, he is improving while out of kennel.

Per staff 12/19: Went into the behavior multipurpose room to see Jett outside of kennel. He was very "growly/barky" in kennel. Jett appeared very playful & like to jump up. He will tense up a bit & give you a look but did not advance after that. He jumped up on me & allowed me to pet him on his sides, chest, legs. I held both of his paws in my hands & rubbed all of his toes & he was absolutely fine with all of it. I also pet his snout & he was perfectly fine. Jett is definitely rambunctious & seems to get aroused very quickly but again showed no outward aggression while I was with him.

12/19 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION:
KNOWN HISTORY:
Stray
KENNEL PRESENTATION:
Jet was at the front of the kennel hard staring and growling when the handler approached. He raised his hackles and flagged his tail high in the air, and would not stop growling and posturing until the handler showed him the leash. He got a bit more neutral but was not loose, and tried to push his nose out when the handler opened the door. She was able to leash him ears to snout, and he came right out once secured.
LEASH SKILLS:
Pulls moderately. Does not like to return to kennel, will pancake and pull back.
HANDLING:
Jet was very aloof in the room with us. He ept his head down while we gave him hind pets. He could focus at times for treats, but was very anxious and stubborn about showing us his tricks. He did show us “sit”, “paw”, and “down” after some time. We continued to attempt more handling, but Jet was pretty unsure. He would appear to solicit by leaning in or putting his head under hands, but then would raise his hackles and hard stare when touched. He got more tolerant with time, but never truly relaxed or loosened up. At one point he demand barked for more treats, but stopped after a few seconds. He showed some interest in a tennis ball but never engaged with it. Jet allowed all handling, but we would stress going very slow with him. He’s food motivated so that’s the way to build a relationship with him. At the end of our time he even allowed another handler to touch his paws and face without issue!
PLAY:
Did not engage
TOYS:
Interest but no possession
COLOR LEVEL & ANY RECOMMENDATIONS:
Experienced Blues

Per staff 12/18: Baring teeth and snarling in kennel.

Per staff 12/18: Bright, alert, and responsive, fractious. Dog allowed another staff member to met him and scratch his butt. Dog allowed me to pet him on side and back then proceeded to growl and snap. Dog lunged and snapped at the other staff member. Dog did not do well with leash muzzle. Dog started growling and snapping while jumping and trying to escape.

Summary of finder notes 12/17: Found yesterday, great with strangers, very friendly with other animals and children. Walked great on leash. Friendly, cuddly, quiet, playful.

MEDICAL:
During his intake exam on 12/18, staff were unable to examine Jett’s ears or mouth due to his behavior. His eyes, nose, and coat were clean and there were no concerns regarding his mobility. He was able to get his vaccinations, but was unable to be microchipped because of his behavior.
