My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

***Currently located in Guerrero, Mexico***

Hello from the Tour de France Litter!
My name is Florence and I and my 5 siblings were named after some famous cities of the Tour de France! While we are born in a surf hotspot, we are definitely sporty pups and are proud name bearers connected to such a paw-some event!

We were born in an empoverished village in Guerrero, Mexico. Our mom is a beloved family dog, but her owners were not able to cover her sterilization. This is a vicious circle because then she had us, 6 more dogs to feed for the family, that barely had enough money to sustain themselves.  Of course we didn't see a vet in our early days, were infested by fleas and ticks and had no vaccines to protect us from the fatal viruses like Distemper or Parvo that are a consistent threat in our village. The family eventually realized that they needed help and contacted Surfers for Strays, who immediately came to our rescue.

The volunteers of the organization brought bags of food for our mom and the two other family dogs, gave us our first vaccines and also made sure we finally got rid of those itchy ticks and fleas. We received a bath with nice warm water, some not so nice tasting dewormer and lots and lots of cuddles and love. While we were waiting for space to open up at the rescue facility we got regular visits from the volunteers, who made sure we were doing well and they also brought lots of love and treats. We couldn't help ourselves but fall in love with them! And so, we were not really sad, when one day they came and brought us to our new residence. We were over the moon, when we saw the cosy beds , the fresh water without any algues , a basket full of toys and our very own food bowls  ! Our mom and the other two dogs at our birth place are now sterilized - Surfers for Strays organized and paid for that!

Recently, I was transported to a foster home in Vancouver, Canada! Though things are different from what I’m used to, I am doing my best to adjust quickly. I take a little bit to warm up to new people, but the more friendly people I meet here (and everyone has been so lovely!), the more open I am to making more human friends. I do really like dogs but I need to make sure they are nice first, so it’s best if dog friends let me adjust and initiate play on my own terms. Once I’m comfortable with you, I am the sweetest girl ever. I love pets (especially belly rubs and scritches on my chest) and snoozing on a soft couch with cozy blankets, and oh my gosh, TREATS!!! I adore snacks and meal time and if you have yummy treats to share then I’m definitely your friend. I like to play with toys sometimes, but I also can be quite calm and just enjoy spending time with my trusted people. I do well in a crate (sometimes I whine very softly to start but then I settle quite quickly) and will sleep through the night. I’m still a puppy but I’m doing great with potty training and I do all my business outside if given the chance.

Life is good. BUT. I heard it will get even better - with my very own fur-ever family!!! I can’t wait to have my very own people!

I am so excited to hear from you (soon!)

All the love and facelicks from your

Florence

More about this rescue

Surfers for Strays was started in January of 2017 by Isabel Velasco and Natalie Ritenour when they rescued 7 puppies and their mother, who had been abandoned at a local hot springs in Lagunillas, Guerrero, Mexico. The puppies were being eaten alive by parasites and their mother was severely malnourished.

Working together the women devised a plan to house and care for the animals and raise funds and more importantly, raise awareness to sterilize pets. They gained enough support in the local community to start helping “callajeros”, street animals in the villages of Troncones, Los Llanos, La Saladita and surrounding regions.

With the help of local veterinarians and citizens, they organized spay and neuter clinics and a program to educate children on how to treat and care for animals. Surfers and other travelers began volunteering and growing the network to foster and adopt animals in the US and Canada. With that momentum and the love and support of key volunteers, Surfers for Strays Inc. was founded in August of 2019 to cover more ground and help more animals escape the cycle of neglect, abuse and abandonment. From 2020-2021, Surfers for Strays adopted out more than 250 dogs and cats to fur-ever homes in North America and paid for more than 3,150 dogs and cats to be spayed and neutered in local communities in Mexico.

Your donations support our programs to sterilize, rehabilitate, find fosters and adopters for animals in need. Your donations also support education programs for the humane treatment of animals in underserved communities. Together we are saving animals and sharing the Mucho Aloha spirit.
