My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

*** If you are interested in Otter, please fill out our adoption application at http://farfels.com/farfels-rescue/adoption-form/ ***

Otter is a 2-year-old Labrador Retriever and Cattle Dog mix with a big heart and a zest for life. He originally came to us at Farfel's Farm & Rescue as a 2-month-old puppy and was adopted by a family in 2022. Unfortunately, due to a lack of proper socialization and training around cats and kids early on, Otter is now back with us and looking for a new home where he can thrive. Otter is a good dog, he just unfortunately ended up in a home with cats and grew up to not get along with them after all.

At 98 pounds, (although a bit overweight), Otter is a big, lovable goofball with an equally big personality. He’s fantastic with other dogs, making him a great companion for a playful pup who loves to wrestle and romp. He plays gently with dogs of all sizes and is a true “beta” in play style, happily letting others take the lead.

In addition to not getting along with his feline siblings, Otter's current family is rehoming him because his size makes it difficult for his owner to manage him on walks, especially when he becomes excited or barks at children. Otter would thrive in a home with a spacious yard to burn off energy and a playful doggy companion to keep him company.

This sweet boy is house-trained and crate-trained, often seeking out his crate for naps and downtime. Otter’s love for “brain work” activities like puzzle toys, sniff walks, and hide-and-seek keeps him engaged and happy. He’s happiest when he has a dog buddy, a yard to run in, and a person who understands his needs.

Otter’s ideal family will have experience with larger, high-energy dogs and be committed to continuing his training. While he may bark at strangers at the door or jump up when excited, his loving and affectionate nature shines through. He adores belly rubs, giving kisses, playing with toys, and snuggling with his people.

Otter is up-to-date on all vaccinations and currently takes Trazodone and Gabapentin to help manage his anxiety. His current vet also recommends continued enrichment activities to keep his mind and body active. We do think that going to a home with another dog will help him a lot. He has been sheltered in his current home and not gotten proper stimulation.

If you’re ready to provide a patient, loving home where Otter can truly shine, he will reward you with endless affection and loyalty. Otter has been through a lot, but with the right environment, this sweet, snuggly boy has so much love to give. Could you be the one to give Otter his happily ever after?

**PLEASE NOTE**. If you're truly interested in adopting Otter please be sure to submit the Farfel's Rescue adoption application that can be found at the link above or at farfels.com. Rescue site applications such as Petfinder or Adoptapet don't provide enough information for us to determine a great match for this very deserving dog and therefore aren't useful. We're sorry, but in many circumstances, we're unable to get back to those those that don't submit a Farfel's adoption application. Thanks very much for choosing rescue!

Their adoption process

Additional adoption info

Farfel's Rescue is a fully foster based rescue, and offers a one week trial with every adoption. We feel that this is much more beneficial to not only the dog, but the adopter too. We believe that only getting 20-30 minutes with a dog before deciding on a lifetime commitment is not a fair amount of time to the adopter, or the dog. Therefore we give adopters one week with the dog to assure it is the right fit, and offer a full refund of their adoption fee should it not workout within the week trial.

An Adoption Application and an Adoption Contract must be completed before any dog can begin their one week foster. Our average adoption fee is $695. This amount serves to cover vetting, spay/neuter, all vaccinations, temperament testing, transport, a microchip, harness, food, and treats.
Our dogs come from Texas, Kansas, New Mexico, Oklahoma and rural Colorado.

Go meet their pets

Pets are transported from the southern states every week. Almost 100% of the time, the dogs are spoken for as a result of adoption applications that can be referenced under Adoption at farfelsrescue.com. We study the applications. If the app indicates there is a match, followed up by a home visit and reference checks, the process moves to the next step. The adopter is committing to a one week foster (of course the dog can be returned at any time prior), and can then choose to finalize the adoption.

More about this rescue

We own a pet boutique named Farfel's Farm & Rescue on Pearl Street in Boulder, Colorado. We have had the good fortune to find our niche in the Boulder community and experience success. We felt it very important to "pay it forward" in gratitude. We couldn't think of a better endeavor than to save dogs who were out of time in the southern states, yet had been identified with great temperaments. We dedicate our efforts to their good health and ultimate wonderful, permanent homes.
