My personality

My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Ace is a 13-lb mix breed pup. He probably some chihuahua, maybe a little Boston terrier or pug in there. He has the cutest snoot and will give you a smooch after he gets to know you. He came to POOCH from Marion County Dog Services after being picked up as a stray. He was very shut down in the county shelter but he quickly came out of his shell at the quieter POOCH kennel. He warms up to people quickly. He loves other small dogs and could do well with bigger dogs given a slow introduction. He is building his confidence and sometimes uses his voice when he wants attention when in his separate space or when he sees something strange and new to him in the distance. He is very food motivated and is learning how to check in with his people when he is feeling nervous. Ace seems to be house broken (although we can never say this with 100% certainty in a kennel environment) and it took him 3 weeks to learn he can jump on the couch at POOCH. The youth have taught him to love his harness, sit, go to bed, and are currently working towards comfort in his crate. Ace’s favorite activity is snuggling up next to his human friends. He will take a nap in a fluffy warm bed or entertain himself with a small soft stuffy. Ace has really blossomed at POOCH and showed us his sweet personality.

Characteristics:

Loves other dogs his size. Could do well with larger dogs with slow introductions

Friendly but shy at first

Learning about the big world and working on his confidence

Great on leash

Enjoys relaxing in laps and will playing with soft toys

Not a fan of stainless steel bowls, does better with plastic or less shiny bowls

THINGS TO BE AWARE OF

Can be a little shy at first

Can be reactive with unknown things on leash. Easy to redirect and to reassure.

More about this rescue

Project POOCH, Inc., provides opportunities for youth in corrections to develop the personal and vocational skills they will need to become responsible, productive members of the community. The program accomplishes this by teaching youth to care for and train shelter dogs for adoption.

We have successfully paired youth at MacLaren Youth Correctional Facility in Woodburn with homeless dogs since 1993.
