My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Meet Steely Dan…,super sweet neutered male is approximately 5 years old. He is FIV+ but that doesn't stop him from loving life and people. Please help us find a permanent home for this lover!
He was found starving but is improving by the day!
Don't miss the opportunity to have this sweet boy in your home and in your arms!

Quick Facts of FIV:
FIV is a retrovirus that compromises a cat’s immune system.
FIV is a feline-only virus that cannot be transmitted to humans.
Cats who test positive for FIV can live for many years without serious symptoms.
A positive FIV test result SHOULD NOT be a death sentence.
FIV is most often transmitted through a bite from an infected cat
Therefore, cats who test positive for FIV CAN live with FIV-negative cats with minimal risk of transmission as long as they do not fight to the point of biting.
A positive FIV test in a cat is not necessarily a diagnosis. False positives can occur.
We strongly recommend against testing community cats for FIV.
Spaying and neutering is key to preventing FIV spread by minimizing biting behavior that is the main mode of transmission.
More and more shelters realize FIV-positive cats are adoptable and creating lifesaving adoption programs for them.

We have given him a birthday of December 1, 2019.

More about this rescue

Whiskers Animal Rescue and Sanctuary is a 501c3 nonprofit organization devoted to helping rescuing animals in need for many years. We primarily concentrate on rescuing cats and kittens in SC and NC states, occasionally performing out of state rescues as well. We had started rescuing animals back in 1985 and since then we have helped over 4500 animals by re-homing them, providing medical care, vaccinating, finding permanent homes for most of them, transporting to other rescues or homes, cross posting and advertising in local magazines and providing shelter for some of the animals a few of whom are still with us until this present day. Our rescue got incorporated as W.A.R.S in August 28th of 2009. Our main interest is to promote responsible guardianship of domestic animals and advocate a compassionate and ethical treatment of all animals. Our rescue group actively enforces to spay and neuter animals in our community which extends to the Northern Horry County and Myrtle Beach area. We promote low cost spay and neuter programs by trying to reduce the number of unwanted, sick and untreated yet adoptable animals who are being euthanized in local shelters for the above-mentioned reasons. Their only “fault” is that they don’t have a home. We have been rescuing such animals from various shelters in SC and NC areas providing them with shelter and urgent and continuous medical care. Our mission is to promote adoption and provide temporary or long-term housing for abused, abandoned, sick and neglected animals until their permanent home can be obtained. Our organization along with our volunteer foster homes also offers a long-term sanctuary to the aged, infirm and non-adoptable animals due to their personality or health issues at all times. On many occasions we are proud to participate in feral cat TNR programs where we assist other rescues or perform the services ourselves. We love every animal we save and consider them our family.
