Check out our sister brand, Kinship, for vet chat, a nutrition calculator, basic obedience training, and (much) more. So you're never flying solo in this pet parenting thing.
Bear is a neutered male 7 year old boxer mix that weights 75 lbs. We believe bear has lived with small dogs most of his life. Because he was abandoned we do not have a lot of history about him. However, he is currently living with a volunteer in Foster with her senior dog, and she has shared this information with us:
Bear has a gentle temperament and has been inclined to follow the people around the house. I worked from home most of this week and he and our dog were my steadfast officemates. Wednesday was the first day he wandered into another room independently during the workday and curled up on the sofa on his own. He prefers it, though, when there is an available lap to plop his giant head in.
He has fallen right into the household routine and lets us know when he wants to go out - though he usually just needs to follow our dogs cues on that one. They have gotten along swimmingly. At mealtime, he regularly eats all but about two bites of his food.
He sleeps and snuggles a lot but can get quite silly with a stuffed toy or bring you something to play tug with. He sleeps contentedly in a dog bed overnight but takes little persuading to come up for a snuggle. He's a strong guy, pulls a little on a leash but is quite good on a walk.
Bear will be headed to the vet and fully vetted before he is adopted out. If you would like to do a meet and greet with bear please fill out his application and send any of your questions to his adoption counselor Marney.b@poainc.org.

We do have a screening and application process. Protectors of Animals requires a veterinarian check before any adoption.
One of our experienced Placement Team members will meet with you and show you the cat, kitten or dog you are interested in, or will guide you towards cats, kittens or dogs that are appropriate for your home environment. We will discuss with you the background of the cat, kitten or dog and what special needs or requirements he or she may have. We will happily take the time to carefully answer any questions you have or discuss any concerns.
POA does not charge an adoption “fee.” It costs POA anywhere from $100 and $400, or more, per dog or cat or kitten to make them well and prepare them for adoption. We are an all-donation organization and we rely on adoption donations to help us continue our work. When you adopt a cat or dog, we will ask for a donation. Our adoption donation information can be found at our website at www.poainc.org.

More about this rescue
We are a NO-Kill rescue and shelter for cats and dogs.
POA was formed in 1975 to rescue abandoned, abused and stray cats and dogs. Today we are one of the oldest and most respected animal welfare organizations in the northeast. POA is here to stay! You will not find a more dedicated, experienced or thorough resource for improving the lives of Connecticut cats and dogs. We confine our focus to our home state because this is where our infrastructure and resources reside, as well as our leadership.
