My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Meet Ember – A Spirited Little Pup with a Big Personality!

Ember is a 9-week-old Rat Terrier mix who is as sweet as she is sassy, with a touch of class to top it off. She has a gorgeous red-and-white coat, the cutest ears, and speckles that will mesmerize you.

About Ember:
Playful and Energetic: Ember is full of life! She loves running around, tracking down scents, and playing with her doggy pals. Despite her small size, she keeps up with the big dogs, holding her own with her 15-lb Rat Terrier foster sibling and a 35-lb mix.

Cuddle Bug: After burning off her energy, Ember is happy to curl up for a cozy nap with her littermates.

Adventurous Spirit: She’s just getting used to walking on a leash and exploring the great outdoors, particularly piles of leaves.

Ember’s Skills and Training:
She’s learning her name and associating treats with good behaviors.
She’s on her way to being potty trained, consistently using pee pads when indoors.
She enjoys chew toys and knows how to share.

What Ember Loves:
Being handled by her foster family, including their 9-year-old. She’s comfortable getting her nails clipped and even enjoys bath time.
Munching on carrots and chasing down apple slices.
Short bursts of outdoor exploration as she gets used to the weather.

Ideal Home:
Ember would thrive in an active home that can match her energy and provide plenty of opportunities for play, learning, and cuddles. She’s high-energy but knows how to relax and loves being part of the group.

More about this rescue

We are a small 501 C3 nonprofit rescue located in Elburn, Illinois. In 2014, Safe Haven Dog Rescue became its own non-profit. We are licensed by the Illinois Agriculture Department.

The majority of our dogs and puppies are pulled from Kill Pounds and Shelters in Tennessee, Arkansas, and Illinois. We also accept local medical cases as often as our finances will allow.

Please take a few moments to read the stories about the dogs and puppies we have available for adoption. We disclose everything we know about the dogs, sometimes we know a lot often we know only that they were strays, thrown away on the side of the road, in the woods, or found in abandoned houses.

While we don’t always know their past we are certain that their future is much brighter.

We hope that you and your family are part of the future…..
