Bru ACCT-A-208184 is currently considered urgent and at risk of euthanasia due to behavioral concerns. Bru must have confirmed placement with a RESCUE PARTNER by THURSDAY, DECEMBER 12TH at 10AM. Should Bru’s medical or behavioral status change, his urgency and timeline for placement may also change.
Bru is an adult male who came in as an owner surrender on 12/1 along with another dog, Paxton. The owners were moving, but unfortunately did not provide us with any information regarding Bru’s behavior or history. Since arriving at the shelter, Bru has been very fearful and nervous. In his kennel, he trembled with wide, tense eyes and was slow to approach staff. Bru was initially reluctant to come out of his kennel and showed defensive behaviors, such as low growls and stiff body language when the door was opened. Over time, he began to allow leashing but remains quite fearful, often retreating to a corner of the kennel and curling up with sad eyes. When taken out of his kennel, Bru continues to be timid and cautious. He avoids eye contact and shies away from touch. Bru is a shy and sensitive dog who needs time and patience to feel comfortable in new environments. He met another dog while at the shelter and was avoidant, but eventually gave her some sniffs. Due to his behavioral concerns, Bru is urgently seeking placement with a rescue partner.
BEHAVIOR:
Per volunteer 12/10:
I took Bru out on Tuesday evening. When I went to his ISO kennel, he got off his bed and came right to the door. When I opened the door, I still had to lean in slightly to leash him, and he came out slowly, but it was an improvement from Sunday. I was with another volunteer, and when he walked out of the room and saw her, he stopped and stared at her suspiciously.
We walked outside. When we returned inside, I sat on the floor, and he stood beside me. He didn't solict pets, nor take treats, and was nervously watching the other volunteer, so the other volunteer backed away. Compared to Sunday, tonight Bru was a little more comfortable - he sniffed my clothing, my cap and was slightly more relaxed around me and not as tense getting pets.
I sat on the floor wrh him for about 10 minutes, but it was closing time, so we couldn't spend any more time together. He went back into his kennel with no issue.
I am so happy that he's becoming more at ease. Everyone that takes him outside is helping him gain his confidence.
Per volunteer on 12/10: Per volunteer on 12/10: I took Bru out on Sunday; he is in iso. He allowed me to walk into his kennel to leash him, but stood on his bed for awhile not coming forward. I dropped the leash, opened the kennel door wide, sat on floor coaxing him forward. He slowly came out, sniffed me, and eventually we walked slowly outside, and to the ISO yard. In the yard, he stood watching me, tail tucked. Eventually he did some walking around, but he is very scared, and as expected had no interest in toys, or treats. I used the end of the leash to gauge petting him, before I used my hand. I gave him gentle, slow long pets and some pats. He didn't react, didn't move away, but didn't seem to want more. Back inside, I gave more pets and pats. Again, he just tolerated them, but wasn't reactive. He is very eager to return to his kennel, so that was no issue. Bru is a shy and sensitive dog who may require a long decompression period before he feels comfortable in a new environment.
Per staff 12/6: I tried to get Bru out for some activity time today, but he's not feeling his best. He came up to the door earlier today and gave me a sniff, but when I went to see him this afternoon he was curled up in the back corner of his kennel with big, sad eyes. I lowered the divider and went around, and he stayed in his spot, not moving. He allowed me to leash him easily, but would not come out. I crouched down and used some baby talk to encourage him, and I saw that he had bloody mucus coming out of his nose. He refused to move and looked very sick, so I decided to let him stay in kennel today. He allowed me to give him some head pets, but did watch me with semi hard eyes and ears pulled back. He was not comfortable, but was tolerant. He allowed me to take my leash off without issue, and stayed curled up in his corner when I closed the door and walked away.
Per staff 12/5: Got Bru out to see how he's doing. He was nervous in kennel, but allowed me to leash him pretty easily. He pancaked as the leash went over his head, but he never escalated and came right out once secured. In the room Bru was very fearful, and kept his tail tucked with a trembling body. He stayed on the opposite side of the room from me when given the choice, and would not approach me at all. He would look up with a very cute head turn when I called him, but he was too fearful to approach me on his own. I gave him lots of space and made sure to approach him sideways and slowly. I held onto the leash for a bit and tried to see if he would take any high value treats or allow any touch, but he was just too scared. He would not take any food, and he ran in fear from any touch and would give a hard stare or completely run his head away to avoid eye contact. I gave him more space and time and he explored the room on his own a bit. After 10+ minutes he did get closer and did come up to me for a sniff, but walked away quickly. After his sniff he trotted over to the door and scratched and whined, so I took him back to his kennel. He walked without too much pulling and hopped right in without issue. Overall, Bru is a super shy guy who needs lots of time to open up and adjust.
Per staff 12/3: Brought Bru into the room to see how he is doing today. In kennel Bru was nervous and was pancaked and tense but did not growl or react today! He came out of kennel fairly easy compared to yesterday. Once in the room Bru remained nervous and was trembling, but was not as tense as he was yesterday towards us and showed a bit more confidence. his eye contact was softer when engaging with his handler and he allowed handling in light spurts, following her closely around the room.

KENNEL PRESENTATION:
Bru was laying on his bed with wide tense eyes and a tense body. He began trembling when the handler opened the kennel door with some low growls with an arched body and stiffened tail. The handler lasso’d him but was able to be secured. He was very fearful and did not want to come out and would not budge at all. The handler used small spurts of leash pressure to get him out.

In the room, Bru came into the room very tense and slow with wide eyes and a stiff body. He walked up to the other handler for some sniffs and allowed some pets and body rubs. Once I got closer to his head he slowly walked away from me and went under the table. He was offered a treat but was too nervous to take any and remained tolerant of light handling but will stiffen and give some hard eye contact. He was trembling under the table and would reach his neck out to sniff curiously. With time, Bru decided to explore some more and sniffed around the room. His tail untucked but remained low. He is too nervous and fearful at the moment so will be taken out at another date.

Per staff 12/1: When I walked up to the lobby I heard lots of barking and saw Bru with his [owners], barking at people in the lobby. Bru began hard barking and did some low growls towards anyone that wasn't his [owners]. The staff brought Paxton, the dog he came with in, and he began loosening up and sniffing her. Staff let them play a bit but Bru began hard staring and becoming stiff towards the staff member, barking and growling at him. I told the staff member to kennel the female dog and asked the [owners] to put Bru in a kennel. Once in the kennel for about 10 minutes, I came back to revisit him and he was very fearful. He was trembling in the back corner with scared neutral eyes. He did not want to approach and wasn't forward or reactive.
MEDICAL:
On 12/6, Bru was prescribed a course of trazodone to help him adjust to the shelter. He was also diagnosed with an upper respiratory infection (URI) or "doggy cold" and started on medication. He tested positive for pneumovirus.
During his intake exam on 12/3, Bru’s eyes were red, his ears were dirty, he had mild staining on his teeth, pressure sores on his elbows, and thinning hair on his face. He was quiet, alert, and responsive, and fearful.
