My personality

My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Midea is a beautiful DSH white cat with striking tabby spots, known for her calm demeanor and amazing motherly instincts. As a devoted mother, she cared for her kittens with unwavering tenderness and affection, and her nurturing nature extends to everyone she loves. Though slow to warm up to new people or unfamiliar places, once she feels comfortable, Midea becomes a gentle, loving companion, always ready to offer her quiet affection.

While Midea enjoys being pampered and thrives on attention, she is never demanding. She prefers to take her time to get to know her surroundings and the people in her life, but once she’s formed a bond, she’s an incredibly devoted and trusting friend. Her calm presence and loving nature make her a cherished member of any household.

Meet and greet/adoption appointments are highly recommended to ensure the animal you are interested in is currently at the shelter. Please call or e-mail the shelter to set up an appointment to meet and adopt!
DON'T FORGET! Cats often do better with a friend! All our cats and kittens have an "Adopt one and the 2nd at half the adoption fee!" bonus!!!

Our kitten/cat adoption fees vary on age, special needs, lonely heart status (cats that have been with us 6+ months), and for our senior to seniors program. Our adoption fees include the following: all of our cats/kittens are current on vaccinations (FVRCP series and Rabies if over 3 months of age) at the point of adoption, dewormed, tested for Feline Leukemia (FeLV) and Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV), treated for fleas/ticks/earmites in addition to being spayed or neutered once the cat reaches 2 lbs in weight. All cats and kittens adopted from the shelter are microchipped. Adoption fees may vary in special circumstances.

Because we are on a busy street, we require that all cats leaving the shelter be in a carrier. All pets are up for adoption until an approved application is processed and their adoption fee is paid.

More about this shelter

BRHS formed in 1998 to help the Brookings Animal Control Department find homes for stray animals. The unclaimed, homeless cats and dogs from Animal Control are BRHS' priority. Those unclaimed are transferred to BRHS where they get the necessary wellness care and are spayed/neutered. Animal Control brings any sick or injured animals to BRHS for immediate care.

In 2013 BRHS was very fortunate to move into its present location across from the Brookings Airport. The building was built specifically to house animals and provides a separate dog kennel area, rooms to house cats, natural lighting, and proper ventilation throughout the whole facility. There are also medical isolation, quarantine, treatment, and surgery rooms.

BRHS has been recognized for and has won multiple awards from both city and national organizations, including several Dog Rescue Awards and a nomination for the Governor’s Award.
