My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Ready to shine!

Rawr! I’m Sharkbait, and I’m a 7-year-old neutered Mastiff mix male, weighing in at 83 pounds.  I am crate-trained, potty-trained, and working on improving my leash manners. I pull when I am scared, but have learnt to 'wait'! I have some medical needs. I am a Heartworm Survivor and will need another bloodtest for a negative heartoworm test in March 2025. I have Hypothyroidism well managed by taking Levothyroxine (~$5.00 for a month's supply and price will vary vary based on market value and where purchased). No biggie!

Sadly, I was rescued from a highly publicized hoarding situation in Mississippi, and because of that, I’ve had some challenges coming out of my shell. I didn't get a chance to learn how to be a carefree guy. I am a slow burner and take time to open up and get to know you, but once you're in my inner circle, I am your silly best bud. after a year in foster care recovering, I am ready to roll, and by roll I mean sleep 16 hours per day in my giant bed and then spend an hour palling around with you, playing with toys, and getting lots of scritches!

I’m a low-maintenance guy who can be relaxed and goofy around those I trust.  I am a giant softy and get along with other doggies and kitties, and kiddos too! I just like my space if they are a bit extra. I am still figuring out what the world is all about so expect some initial nervousness. Oncewe open up, I'll ask for pets, play and my enrichment activities; new things to sniff, rolling food dispensers, kongs. I can be a bit of stubborn oaf at times and may feel like a back-bench student, but I may be playing ya ;) I am just a slightly grumpy uncle will give you my side eye too. But it's all an act till I hug you! also, fair warning, I snore!

I will make a great fit for someone who loves to snuggle up at home, wants a very chill companion, and will work to win over my affection. While naturally nervous, I am stoic in all situations that make me uncomfortable. I may give off a bark, but I am ZERO bite. In the past, I have gone to the beach and enjoyed it, so I have some adventuring left in me, but I am also very adaptable with time and patience. I would suit a more mellow household, and I like ladies more than men. I would be ok with kids as long as they are respectful of space. I would still be fine, but grumpy. I would love to have my crate and have alone time there. If you think we can be a solid cuddly team together, we have to meet! My adoption fee is $250 and that includes spaying/neutering, shots, and microchip.  If you want to take me home, please fill out the form on the website here: https://theanimalpad.org/adoption-application/.

Their adoption process

Additional adoption info

We prioritize local San Diego applicants. We do not provide transport of dogs to other states, and don't allow the dogs to fly in the cargo of the plane.
Our adoption process from start to finish, involves 3 standard forms, and 2 situational.
All potential applicants must be capable of providing their adopted pet with routine and emergency veterinary care (yearly health checks, keeping vaccinations current, heartworm/flea preventatives, and immediate care in the event the animal is sick or injured). They are required to license their pet, and keep an identification tag on their pet at all times.
All applicants must agree to a home check, and provide us with a veterinary reference, or personal references if you're a first-time pet owner. Our home checks are not to invade the privacy of the applicants, we do this to ensure the pet is going into a safe home. We do not discriminate against non-homeowners, or those living in apartments, condos, or otherwise.
Our adoption fees vary from $150-1000.
Applicants must agree in writing that if for any reason they are unable to keep or care for their pet, the pet will be surrendered back to our rescue and not re-homed, turned over to a shelter, pound, rescue, new owner, sold, etc.

More about this rescue

Overview
The Animal Pad is a nonprofit, all-breed dog rescue devoted to saving the lives of dogs facing euthanasia at high kill animal shelters and off the streets of Mexico. We rescue, rehabilitate, and re-home locally.

We are dedicated to animal advocacy, and educating dog owners on the importance of spaying and neutering their pets. We are a foster based rescue, and rely heavily on the kindness and generosity of the amazing people who make donations toward the rescue and care of the dogs we save.

We are always looking for adopters, fosters, donations, volunteers, etc.. Please let us know if you would like to get involved by contacting us at one of the email addresses found below.
