My personality

My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Meet Cedrick, or more affectionately known as “Rocco” by his foster family.
Rocco is a 38# black/tan/white mix, and is the epitome of a "Good boy"! He loves pets and belly rubs. He is gentle with the kids (ages 5 and 7) in his foster home. He has so much love to give! He has soulful and intelligent eyes, floppy ears, and the squishiest little face. Have you seen his little diamond eyebrows?!
Rocco really loves the company of people and other dogs. He will either sit close by and within view, or will spring into playtime when he sees an opportunity to engage.

Rocco can be headstrong or demonstrate “selective hearing,”. He loves being outdoors and does not always like coming into the house when playtime is over. Rocco isn’t a big fan of his crate, but will go in with some encouragement and yummy treats. When he’s first let out of his crate, he runs around with so much delight and pep that he can jump up and push over little ones, so caution should be taken by having adults lead the way.

Rocco sits nicely to have his paws wiped after going outside. He knows “sit,” “down,” “come,” and “leave it.” He is learning when treats are “all done” and he won’t get any more. Toys are new to him; it seems that he only had access to cardboard boxes and catalogs in the past, so he will happily help you shred your Amazon box for the recycling bin. Rocco loves balls and sticks the most, but is exploring his new bonafide toy variety! He is a rough chewer, and since he still has some adolescent tendencies, needs to be kept occupied with interesting toys and positive activities, or else he will get into things he shouldn’t. He will easily search out and remove squeakers from stuffed toys. Rocco would love puzzle toys, and would likely excel at agility or nose work to keep his mind and body active.

Rocco is very strong, and is evenly matched when he romps with his 70# foster sister. He plays nicely with his 9# foster sister, who lets him know if he gets too rough. Rocco is very intelligent and adventurous, and loves to run and occasionally parkour off of items in his foster family’s back yard. Rocco also loves water: he has taken a dip into the local stream, and enjoys getting baths.

Rocco is working on leash walking. He walks well at the heel about 50% of the time, but when he is distracted or sees an interesting critter (small animals), he will pull. He is very interested when the smaller resident pet birds flap and fly, but is listening well to “leave it” and is making great progress.

When he’s all worn out, he enjoys lounging on the couch and snuggling with his people and foster sisters. Rocco hasn’t had house accidents as long as he’s kept on a schedule and is walked/let out after meals and before bedtime.

Rocco loves snuggling at the foot of the bed or next to his foster family at night. He turns into the cutest circles to find his cozy spot near his person!

Rocco is finishing up his heartworm treatment and will soon be ready to be adopted into his forever family!

More about this rescue

We are a small 501 C3 nonprofit rescue located in Elburn, Illinois. In 2014, Safe Haven Dog Rescue became its own non-profit. We are licensed by the Illinois Agriculture Department.

The majority of our dogs and puppies are pulled from Kill Pounds and Shelters in Tennessee, Arkansas, and Illinois. We also accept local medical cases as often as our finances will allow.

Please take a few moments to read the stories about the dogs and puppies we have available for adoption. We disclose everything we know about the dogs, sometimes we know a lot often we know only that they were strays, thrown away on the side of the road, in the woods, or found in abandoned houses.

While we don’t always know their past we are certain that their future is much brighter.

We hope that you and your family are part of the future…..
