My personality

My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Adelaid is a gentle and sweet white and cream Pyrenees mix, whose calm and loving nature makes her a cherished companion. With her soft, fluffy coat and expressive eyes, she exudes an aura of serenity that draws everyone in. Despite her large size, Adelaid is known for her tenderness, always eager to offer affection and comfort. She keeps her kennel impeccably clean, showing her quiet sense of order and respect for her space. Though she is incredibly sweet, Adelaid would benefit from someone who can help her build confidence and guide her through new experiences.

Her playful yet soothing demeanor makes Adelaid the perfect balance between energetic play and serene companionship. She could be comfortable around other animals, as long as introductions are done properly, showcasing her adaptable and patient nature. Adelaid loves attention, but her kindness and patience are what truly set her apart. Her loyalty and gentle spirit make her beloved by all who know her, and with the right guidance, she will continue to blossom into an even more confident and loving companion.
Since many of our adoptable dogs are in foster homes, appointments are highly recommended to ensure the animal you are interested in is currently at the shelter. Please call or e-mail the shelter to set up an appointment to meet and adopt!

Our adoption fees include the following: all of our dogs/puppies are current on vaccinations (DHPP and Rabies if over 3 months of age) at the point of adoption, dewormed, heartworm tested and current on preventative, microchipped, treated for fleas/ticks and are spayed or neutered. Our large dog adoption fee is generally $175 + tax. Our small dog and puppy adoption fee is generally $275+ tax. Adoption fees may vary in special circumstances. Due to space limitations, we do not hold dogs.

Because we are on a busy street, we require that all dogs leaving the shelter be in a carrier or on leash. All pets remain up for adoption until an approved application is processed and their adoption fee paid.

More about this shelter

BRHS formed in 1998 to help the Brookings Animal Control Department find homes for stray animals. The unclaimed, homeless cats and dogs from Animal Control are BRHS' priority. Those unclaimed are transferred to BRHS where they get the necessary wellness care and are spayed/neutered. Animal Control brings any sick or injured animals to BRHS for immediate care.

In 2013 BRHS was very fortunate to move into its present location across from the Brookings Airport. The building was built specifically to house animals and provides a separate dog kennel area, rooms to house cats, natural lighting, and proper ventilation throughout the whole facility. There are also medical isolation, quarantine, treatment, and surgery rooms.

BRHS has been recognized for and has won multiple awards from both city and national organizations, including several Dog Rescue Awards and a nomination for the Governor’s Award.
