Here's what the humans have to say about me:
In Flemington - Are you looking for the world’s easiest, chillest, sweetest dog? Then meet Spirit! Spirit is a 40lb, spayed female Australian Shepherd and probably Black Lab mix. She is guesstimated to be about 7 years old, but don’t let her age turn you off - she has many wonderful years ahead of her!
Spirit is incredibly sweet, quiet, gentle and mellow making her a super easy dog to have around. Who has time to train, housebreak and run around with a high maintenance dog over the busy holidays?! Spirit would make a perfect companion for a senior, a first-time dog owner, or anyone looking for a couch potato snuggle buddy.
She is up-to-date on shots, fully housebroken and completely reliable in the home even when left alone for several hours. Although we don’t know much about Spirit’s background (she was found as a stray), she probably had a bit of a tough life. As a result, she is shy and timid. She desperately wants to be loved, but she is also head shy - ducking if you approach her head - and will move away if you try to grab her or pick her up. It appears she had never been on a leash before, but is now comfortable on a leash as long as she is walked slowly and gently - she gets scared if her leash is pulled or yanked.
Spirit has been settling in to her foster home and warming up. As she learns she is now in a safe place, she is gaining confidence and proactively seeking more attention and lots of pets. Spirit would do well as an only dog, but also could be placed in a home with other pets. She tested well with cats, mainly ignoring them (she has low to no prey drive). Spirit also does well with dogs that are gentle and patient with her. She was in foster with a young, but respectful dog and they got along beautifully. The younger dog helped her come out of her shell, and Spirit was even engaging him in play after a few days.
When Spirit is uncomfortable with something, her response is to quietly retreat - she shows no signs of aggression or reactivity at all. When outside, Spirit will need to be kept on a leash or in a yard with a secure fence. Although she won’t forcibly try to escape a space, if there is a gap in a fence or an inadvertently open gate, she may get out. For that reason, invisible fences will not be appropriate for her.
Spirit is a very gentle, easy going, low maintenance dog who wants nothing more than a soft place to sleep and someone to love her and make her feel safe. Spirit is being fostered in NJ.
