My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Angel is a very special girl, so special, her name doesn't quite grasp it, even! At about 3 years old, all sweet Angel knew was the outdoor life, in a wire pen, through the snow, rain, cold, and heat. She was often co-housed with at least one of her own puppies, with food dumped in on occasion. Angel has never known the love, trust, and loyalty of people until coming to us, and so far, she has flourished! She had gone from being a young dog who only knew 1 thing, to be defensive, on guard, and scared of humans; to now, where she makes it more than obvious that she just adores being loved on by us staff members, and even more so, showing her own love for us. Angels affection is expressed through her adorable puppy dog eyes, as she relaxes on your lap, near your feet, or from acrossed the room. She is an angel among so many other amazing qualities, we've yet to even explore, and some that can't even be articulated on this profile! Angel weighs in around 40 pounds, and every bit of it is love - but she needs to warm up to you first, as strangers still feel like a danger to her. The best way to help her warm up is by ignoring her entirely, and existing in peace for awhile with her. She DOES have some very specific needs, so please make sure your home meets the following criteria before applying, while some criteria is flexible, such as crating her with visitors, etc; some are not at this time.

- No other pets (or willing to have them segregated with very limited, positive interactions until trust is built for her, and her outlets of energy are properly met, such as prey drive - playing with toys, chasing things, etc)

- No children living in the home (she can be crated if children come to visit, and she will be happier that way. Kids stress her out a LOT)

- Limited men, she warms up a LOT quicker to women than men, so if there's a man living in the home; he's got to have patience, understanding, and loads of treats!

- Dog experience in general, and open to coaching from AWF Manager/Dog Trainer (free of charge), or another professional.

If you are interested in bringing our darling Angel into your home, please apply; and let's set up a meet & greet after-hours!

More about this shelter

We are a non-profit organization out of Monticello, IA specializing in the care for dogs and cats that need us. Our care does not stay local, as we take transports from all over the United States, and adopt all over as well!

Our mission's primary focus is to help reduce the homeless pet population by finding homes for spayed/neutered pets, and helping educate WHY this process is so important, and the proper way to care for pets!
