My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Introducing Artie!

Playful Outdoorsy Energetic Happy

Hi there, I’m Artie! I’m a playful, affectionate, and energetic Great Dane who’s always ready to brighten your day. Mornings with me are pure joy—I love greeting my humans with wagging tails, big jumps, and the happiest smile you’ve ever seen! When I’m not chasing after my favorite Jolly Ball or exploring the yard, I enjoy lounging on my comfy dog bed or snuggling up close to my favorite people. I’m a true Velcro Dane—you’ll never have to wonder where I am because I’ll be right by your side.

I’m also a social guy who loves making new friends. I recently met the neighbor’s small dog and did really well, and I’m polite with other dogs during introductions. I haven’t lived with cats, but when I’ve met them at the vet, I was calm and curious—so I think I could coexist with them with slow and thoughtful introductions. I’ve done well meeting kids aged 10 and older, too, and I’m always gentle during our interactions.

Here’s what I love most:

  • Playing fetch and chasing my toys, especially my beloved Jolly Ball.

  • Exploring the outdoors on a long lead—it’s so much fun to sniff and explore!

  • Snuggling with my humans—I’ll happily take all the cuddles I can get.

  • Running, walking, and spending time with my foster family and doggie pals.

And here’s what I’m not a fan of:

  • Being left alone for too long—I miss my people!

  • Loud or sudden noises—they can startle me.

  • Being outside by myself. I’m all about companionship!

I’m a smart boy who loves to learn. I already know commands like sit, down, shake, off, and “up” for loading into the car. I’m housebroken, crate-trained, and have been trusted with free roam for short periods without any issues. I walk well on a leash and love using a 50-foot lead for outdoor playtime, though I’m still working on perfecting my recall. Since I’m food-motivated, training with me is always rewarding and fun.

Health-wise, I’m doing great! My foster family keeps me on Science Diet for urinary crystals, and I’ll have an evaluation soon to see if I can switch to regular food. My eyes, which used to be watery due to a combination of entropion/ectropion, have improved a lot since I’ve gained weight.

I’ve recently had some exciting health updates! I’m neutered and recovering well from my gastropexy—it’s day 10 of recovery as of December 26th, and my incision looks great. I’ve been following most of the post-surgery rules, though sometimes it’s hard to keep my zoomies in check. What can I say? I love to have fun!

In my forever home, I’d love:

  • A mid-size to large yard for my zoomies and outdoor adventures. While a physical fence isn’t required, it’s strongly recommended to keep me safe.

  • Another dog to play with or regular opportunities for doggy playdates or daycare.

  • I can be ok if my family is gone for up to 8 hours during the work day but I would prefer if it was less than 8 hours or a work-from-home position.

  • Someone who will continue my training and help me keep working on my recall.

If you’re looking for a sweet, playful, and loyal companion, I’m your guy. I promise to fill your days with laughter, love, and endless fun. Let’s make some amazing memories together!

This loving and playful boy is ready to bring joy, companionship, and lots of snuggles to his forever family. Artie is a truly special Dane who will make an amazing addition to any home!

More about this rescue

Upper Midwest Great Dane Rescue was started in 2008 by a group of Dane lovers who desire to help Danes in need. The rescue is made up of all volunteers who lovingly give of their time and money to help these wonderful dogs. Volunteers include people from every walk of life, all with one thing in common, love of Great Danes.

Each animal coming to the rescue is temperament tested, given a physical, vaccinated, wormed, checked for heartworm and tick borne illnesses and treated as needed. All dogs are sterilized before being re homed. The dog is then placed in a foster home to wait for someone to love it forever.
