My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

This is Junie, our friend from City of Raytown Animal Services. They first met Junie when they were called to assist with an eviction where a dog had been left behind. In most of those cases, Animal Control Officers work with the landlord and pet owner, and the pets are retrieved from the property later that day. Rarely, but in the case of Junie, neither her owner nor the owner of the property wanted her with them or in the house. Junie had been chased out of the only home she had known, on a night where the temps dropped below freezing. She was terrified and would not come near anyone, so Animal Control left her food and water and made her a promise that they'd be back to get her somewhere safe.

This loyal girl stayed in the yard of her home, resting on the porch, waiting for her owners to return for her all weekend. They continued to try to reach her owners without success. No one was coming for this sweet baby. With the amazing help of a KC Dog Trapper volunteer, Junie was contained on a slip lead. Junie did not want to leave her home; it was the only place she knew and she was certain her people would come back. This is when the volunteer with KC Dog Trappers offered to keep Junie overnight, allowing her to decompress and see how she responded.

Junie did great and was able to relax a bit and sleep that night. Everyone was so thankful for the offer of the overnight foster--this gesture more than likely saved Junie's life. Junie is now receiving all the love and care a dog could want from the staff at Laurel Pet Resort. She's in a cozy room with a calm Dutch Shepherd named Amina.

What Junie needs now is a foster or adopter who has experience with shy and fearful dogs and understands how to take things slowly with a dog who has been through trauma. She needs a quiet space to decompress, learn to trust and adjust to a new environment. She would do well with a calm and confident dog buddy to show her things are going to be ok. She has not been cat tested and right now she would do best in a home without young children. She is between 1-2 years old and is a cute blue/white female pit mix.

Junie has given us a chance to prove to her not all humans will abandon her, now we need to find someone who will give Junie a chance to show them what a loving and loyal friend she can be.

If you would like to know more about Junie please call or text The Pet Connection at 913-671-7387. Junie is in the Kansas City area, but transport might be available to the right home.

The photos below show the importance of even a short-term foster. Junie went from being terrified to feeling secure in just 48 hours. You can make such a difference in her life.

More about this rescue

Since 1999, The Pet Connection has found homes for more than 7,000 animals and rehabilitated hundreds of dogs and cats with aggression, fear and anxiety issues. We have spayed or neutered over 8,000 dogs and cats in our own free and low-cost clinics since 2002 and assisted another 5,800 pets with low-cost services since 2006. The Pet Connection was founded in 1999 in Mission, Kansas, to offer shelter for homeless pets, adoptions and training. We were one of the first no-kill advocacy groups in the Kansas City metro area and the first cage-free facility in Johnson County to offer education about available spay and neuter programs. In 2006, The Pet Connection relocated to a facility in Mission that enabled all dogs and cats to have their own rooms while awaiting adoptive homes or being rehabilitated due to behaviors that hindered adoption prospects. The Pet Connection currently focuses on pet adoptions, dog and cat training, aggressive dog rehabilitation, and classes for pet owners. We were the first in this area to offer free training/behavior classes to adopters.

The Pet Connection trainers and behavior members use a team approach in order to implement the ideas that have the highest success rate. Our five behavioral trainers working out of the Kansas City metro have a variety of backgrounds applicable to dog training and behavior. The Pet Connection implements positive reinforcement training methods, where the dog learns to face the trigger, but to respond appropriately. Read about our experienced trainers under “Meet the Team" on our website at www.thepetconnection.net.

The Pet Connection has always been committed to being no-kill advocates. We have been involved in many projects with local and national organizations to help Kansas City progress in how homeless pets are cared for and to improve the services that they receive. Our organization is a 501c3 charity in the state of Kansas, and has always provided thousands of dollars worth of supplies, including cat litter, food, toys, beds and dog houses, to other rescues and shelters.
