Freya Update

We're working on getting some more weight on her, and getting her diarrhea under control but she's doing great! This sweet baby is small but mighty for sure! She's a fierce survivor, and has a heart of gold.

Despite a difficult start in life, having lost her mother and siblings to the harsh conditions on the reservation, Freya has demonstrated remarkable resilience. Her gentle nature and unwavering trust in humans are a testament to the kindness of her rescuers, who introduced her to the concept of love. The subtle wagging of her tiny tail is sure to warm your heart as she curls up in your lap and exhales a sigh of relief.

Freya's demeanor is characterized by an intriguing blend of sweetness and orneriness. As a voracious ankle biter, toe nibbler, and shoe stealer, she showcases her playful yet mischievous nature. Watching her drag toys or shoes, twice her size, across the room is a genuinely amusing spectacle. Undoubtedly, her feisty attitude has contributed to her survival.

Adoption Fees:

All adoption fees include spay/neuter, all vaccinations and current worming plus any other needed veterinary care to date.

More about this rescue

Founded in May of 2004 by Floss Blackburn, Denkai Animal Sanctuary has enjoyed a long running successful path in providing life saving services for domestic animals in crisis throughout the United States and Mexico.

In the formative years, Denkai established in Weld County, CO having purchased three facilities totaling over 640 acres, performing farming, conservation, large animal rescue, pet animal rescue and low-cost veterinary care for the area, Denkai quickly established as the largest and most diverse organization of its kind in the area.

Seeing a gap in services and need for a strong presence in Montezuma County, Denkai's board of directors voted to relocate the organization in 2017 to Yellow Jacket, CO. In three short years, Denkai has expanded to a second location in Cortez, CO. This location at 209 West Main was purchased in September of 2020 with the help of Region 9 and First National Bank of Cortez.

Denkai -Cortez, CO - This is our 16,000 sf retail center - The store boasts an adoption center for rescued dogs and cats and sells retail pet supplies, accepts donations of used items, and provides low cost programs such as pet food and vaccinations for low income pet owners.

Since Inception, Denkai has provided hands on rescue services to 13,000 pet animals and equine in need.
