Max is walks well on a leash but wants to smell everything.

Max came to us as a week ago as a very scared and malnourished stray. Life had not treated him well but he must have once had a home because he understands basic commands and is very loving towards everyone he’s met young and old. He is scared of the crate but has not seemed to need it. He sleeps in a bedroom and during the day and has free room for up to 5 hours before being let out with no accidents or destruction of property. He has not attempted to climb on beds or couches. He loves being around his human companions and will plop down wherever we are. He is starting to have a voracious appetite which is good because he has some weight to put on. He’s very gentle. We are doing a slow introduction with our cats and he’s been very respectful to them. He hasn’t chased., barked or growled at them and he will lay down if they hiss at him for being too close. He’s seems to be good with other dogs based on his
journey with fellow canine companions from Tennessee. He is just starting to show signs of being playful but is still recovering from his malnourishment and adaptation to a new home so we expect this will increase in time. He does great on walks and has never pulled. Now that he has an appetite he needs to learn table manners as he’s so tall he can counter surf so we are working on that. He’s a real sweetheart.

Max is an absolutely lovely dog. He was extremely malnourished and ill when we got him but he is thriving now. He’s already put on almost 30lbs and his health has improved so much that you would never know he was a stray.

Max is typically left alone for about 3-5 hrs per day depending on my college aged daughter’s schedule without any accidents or destroying property.  Initially he didn’t play much but now that he’s healthy he likes playing tug and chase. He LOVES walks but the hound in him likes to sniff. If you want a brisk walk he will need a better collar than the one we have. He’s
been gentle with my cats and I think they trust him even when he gets a little rambunctious. He LOVES other dogs. He will lay down when he sees smaller dogs to gain their trust. Max Loves his people. He’s a truly devoted dog. Max is not a barker. He will bark to defend and when he sees dogs he wants to play with but that’s about it so far. Max is a counter surfer and is extremely motivated by food. He does respond quickly when reprimanded doing something he shouldn’t .

Max would do well in any home that can show him consistency and love. He would do best in a home where he is not left alone all day or he would do well with other animal companions to keep him company. Right now he does not require a lot of exercise. He goes on a daily walk. We have large fenced in yard but he prefers to be inside with his humans most of the time. This may change as he gets stronger and more comfortable. He seems to be a fast learner, a people pleaser and would be fine for a first time giant owner.

More about this rescue

Just Giant Rescue Inc (JGRI) is a dog rescue catering to giant breed dogs. We don’t discriminate against breed, but they must be giants such as the regal Great Dane, loyal Mastiff, and clownish Saint Bernard, to name a few.

We strive to follow the 3 R’s.
• Rescuing. We rescue from all types of situations, owner surrenders, and from local shelters. We strive to help as many as we can, with what resources we have available.
• Rehabilitating. All dogs are fostered inside loving homes, becoming temporary family members. They are fully vet checked, vaccinated, spayed/neutered, and guarded against heartworm, fleas and ticks. They are also given a temperament test prior to being eligible for adoption.
• Re-homing. Each dog is individually matched with the best suited adoptive home for them. Each applicant wanting to adopt must fill out an application and complete a home check prior to being approved.
