My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website.

Say hello to Pepper! This senior pit bull mix came to The Furever Project from the Spotsylvania Animal Shelter (VA). We don't know much about her past, but we do know that she's one of the sweetest dogs around!

Pepper is a very friendly girl, and she loves meeting new people. When someone starts petting her, she leans into them as if to say, "I'm enjoying this SO much! Please don't stop!" :) Pepper is also good with other dogs and with cats. (She lives with both in her foster home.) She doesn't need to have a furry companion in her adoptive home, though — she would be fine as an only pet.

Pepper is both crate trained and housebroken. She's not particularly vocal, but she will emit a few rather funny-sounding and adorable woofs when she knows it's mealtime. (Her foster parents say she has a "spicy" side and affectionately call her "Miss Spicy.") Pepper needs some obedience training (including how to walk politely on a leash), but she is very food-motivated and eager to please, so she should pick up commands in no time. A group obedience class — which The Furever Project requires — will do wonders for her!

Pepper hasn't shown much interest in any of the toys she's been offered. However, she does love Kongs filled with peanut butter — especially if they're frozen! She also enjoys all kinds of treats. In fact, she's never met a treat that she didn't like!

Pepper has a lot of love to offer a family or an individual who is ready to give her the best years of her life. Could that be you? If so, please submit an adoption application for her today!

*PLEASE NOTE: Pepper is heartworm positive and is currently undergoing treatment. However, she can be adopted under a foster-to-adopt contract. This type of contract makes it possible for The Furever Project to continue covering all medical costs associated with her heartworm treatment until negative results are obtained.

More about this rescue

We are not selective about the breed of dog we help. We consider the lives of all breeds to be equal. The labor force behind our mission is 100% volunteer staffed. We save dogs from shelters as well as from owners who cannot care for their dogs any longer. The dogs we take in are placed in loving foster homes until they find their forever home. We do not have a brick and mortar facility; we are 100% foster based including loving fospice for terminally ill dogs. We work to support the local community by providing education on care and treatment of dogs. Promoting safe handling, the importance of vaccinations, heartworm prevention, advocating and providing financial assistance to those in need for spay and neutering. We arrange for community outreach by building kennels and outdoor shelters to get dogs off chains.
