Wheezy ACCT-A-208285 is currently considered urgent and at risk of euthanasia due to length of stay and lack of space for incoming dogs. Wheezy must have confirmed placement with a RESCUE PARTNER, FOSTER, or ADOPTER by SATURDAY, DECEMBER 28TH at 10AM. Should Wheezy’s medical or behavioral status change, his urgency and timeline for placement may also change.
Wheezy is a sweet and affectionate one-year-old who loves going for walks and cuddling up for naps. He appears housetrained and shows off his good manners by sitting, coming when called, and waiting patiently at the door to go outside. He’s not too sure about toys yet, but seems to enjoy the squeaky sounds. Wheezy could do well in a home with another dog, so if you have one, please bring them along for a meet! Wheezy would thrive in an adult-only home with a patient family who can guide him. He would love a fenced yard to run freely, but he’s also perfectly happy with plenty of walks. If you’re looking for a joyful, loving companion, come meet Wheezy – he’s sure to win your heart! Due to his length of stay, Wheezy is urgently seeking placement with a rescue partner, foster, or adopter.
BEHAVIOR:
Per staff 12/20: Very sweet, affectionate, and joyful! Loved to be outdoors. Peed and pooped. Speedy walker but easy on leash. Much more interested in pets than playtime.
Per staff 12/19: Sweet boy, good walk.
Short term foster parent’s portrayal of Wheezy, written from his point of view:
“Hi! My name is Wheezy! I’m just a gentle, playful little boy looking for my forever home! I love going for walks, napping on the couch and awkwardly leaning all my weight on you.
“I am only one year old but I have very good manners and can even show you my tricks. So far, I showed my foster mom that I can sit, come, respond to my name, follow directions on a walk and let her know that I need to go potty outside by patiently waiting at the front door. I’ve still got somethings left to learn, though. Like what are indoor stairs? Where do they go? Why are they there? They only make sense to me when they are outside. Also, what are you supposed to do with toys? I like to hold them gently in my mouth for a moment before putting them on the ground. But I do appreciate the squeaky noises they make! Lastly, I am CERTAIN that I am a lap dog, but for some reason I don’t fit in my foster mom’s lap. Maybe I could try your lap instead? And you could tell me that I’m a good boy! That’s my favorite thing!
“I’m a little uncertain so I’d do best in a forever home with a patient family who can gently guide me and give me lots of pets. I’d enjoy a fenced yard where I can run off leash. But as long as we can go on plenty of walks and I can follow you around the house, then I’ll be happy! I know my forever home is out there! If you think it might be you, come to ACCT and say hello!”
Per foster 12/15: Yesterday it took him a while to finally rest but he has been getting in many naps and walks.
Per volunteer 12/6: Potty trained, coughing a lot!
Per staff 12/4: Chill through whole walk.
12/4 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION:
KNOWN HISTORY:
Stray
KENNEL PRESENTATION:
Wheezy was standing at the front with dilated pupils and a high wagging tail. When he saw the leash he sat upright and his eye contact softened and he allowed for easy leashing. No issues exiting or returning
LEASH SKILLS:
Pulls moderately, VERY strong
HANDLING:
Once in the room Wheezy was energetic and social with both of us in the room. He had a curly high tail and was very waggy in the room. He allowed all over handling and remained loose when interacting with him and well mannered. He was not jumpy or mouthy and demonstrated knowledge of sit. He took treats gently when offered as well. He did well when a new handler entered the room as well and greeted them with loose body language.
PLAY:
Engaged in play
TOYS:
Interest but never took possession
Per staff 12/4: Bright, alert, and responsive, friendly, sweet. Did well with all handling and restraint.
MEDICAL:
On 12/21, Wheezy was noted to have bloody discharge coming from his nose. He is pending a recheck for his URI symptoms.
On 12/17, Wheezy was diagnosed with a complicated URI. He was prescribed enrofloxacin and an extended course of doxycycline. He will be on both these medications until at least 12/26.
Per foster 12/16: He does have a pretty snotty runny nose. I’m guessing this is jut due to his little cold. He also has been waking himself up from sleep with an loud odd noise that sounds like the most aggressive snoring you have ever hear mixed with a gagging/dry heaving and gasping. It seems like he can’t really control or stop it. It goes on for maybe 5-10 seconds each time. He had 4 episodes of this his first night with me. He does seem to be struggling to breath out of his nose because of all the snot. Poor love!
On 12/7, Wheezy was diagnosed with an upper respiratory infection (URI) or "doggy cold" and started on doxycycline. He tested negative for pneumovirus.
