My personality

My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Meet Nilo !!
This big gentle giant is very well behaved and looking for a great new home.
Nilo is an approx 4 year old, male Great Dane.
He weighed 105 pounds at his recent vet visit.
He has been neutered, updated on vaccines and microchipped. He is Heartworm negative. He did great at the vet and his nails were clipped (some photos show them long when he first arrived)
Nilo is a very sweet boy. He is a big sensitive guy that just wants a family to love. He can be shy at first and then is glued to you. Like most Danes it was hard for him to lose his family. Once Nilo warms up to new people, he is just the sweetest boy. He listens very well and has good manners.
He has done wonderful with dogs of all sizes even small ones. He’s also been great with cats. He’s been around kids and does well. He has not been around very young kids and he would likely prefer kids over 10. He has a tendency to be more fearful of men. We do think he would bond with a male it just take more time.
Nilo has been doing fantastic with his potty training. He’s great about crate training. He may know how to open a crate we are still trying to figure out how he let himself out today. He rides well in the car. He walks fairly well on a leash but can pull a bit at times. He has been easy to correct when pulling. His previous owner walked him off leash so he’s readjusting to not having that freedom. Overall he’s very easy to have around.
He has a fairly low energy level. He does enjoy a good run around the back yard. He can get excited to go outside when you first get home and try to push out the door into the yard to get out for a run around. Otherwise he’s very gentle.
Nilo can be very shy when meeting new people. Sometimes when he meets someone new, his first instinct is to give a low, soft growl because he is nervous and unsure. After a few minutes of a soft and gentle introduction, he gets used to the person and warms up just fine. He does take longer to warm up to men, especially once he attaches to a female human and his female human is not around.
His is a shy boy at times with new things. When he is scared he will run away and pee. He did this once at his foster’s house once when her children (who he never met) walked in the front door of the house for the first time. He tried to run out the back door and couldn’t so he peed by the door. Since then, his foster has either met new people outside with him or stood by his side at the front door when people come in, and that seems to have prevented the startled fleeing/peeing behavior. Danes are sensitive and do take time to adjust so please be patient and understand if you adopt him.
Nilo has no issues sharing food, treats and toys with other dogs or people. He does need to eat from a raised feeder. He will beg for food at times but does it from a distance so it’s not too imposing. He will do diving for goodies in the trash can if given the opportunity but so far has not chewed or destroyed anything in the house when left out.
Great Danes have a high potential for bloating. Please do your research on this prior to adopting. After eating and drinking he needs to be crate rested for a bit before playing to help prevent this. Danes are large dogs which means their overall care is more expensive. Aside from food costs they have a larger weight for Heartworm and flea preventions and any medications needed. Please ensure your family is financially stable and prepared for those additional costs. They also drool A LOT! They can’t help it with those saggy jowls.
They are a sensitive breed so please thoroughly consider all of this before brining him into your home. It is very hard on them to be returned and for that to happen over something we already made you aware of up front in the post would be terrible.
If you’re looking for a big guy that is easy going and super loyal then he might be your guy!
Vet and home checks required.
Located in Hampton VA.
(He will need to be adopted within a 2 hour drive radius)
