Dog Name: Quint
Breed: Shepherd mix
Sex: Male
Age: 3
Weight: 65lbs
Medical Needs: HW positive. Appointments will be scheduled with GRR’s vet, and must be kept as a condition of adoption. Adopters must live within 1 hour of Milford, DE to ensure he can be brought to his appointments.
Housebroken: Yes
Crate trained: Yes. He tends to holler when he sees new dogs, which we're working on, but otherwise he's quiet as a mouse.
Good in the car: Yes
Good on a leash: He's your typical spastic shepherd. He walks nicely if you're confident, but will pull if he thinks he can get away with it.
Energy level: Medium
Need a fenced in yard: No
Dog Friendly: Yes, but there MUST be a 2-week shutdown period and a gradual integration. Quint is not a dog you throw headfirst into new dynamics. He does best with dogs that are not overly dominant, and while he accepts corrections, it's still best to give him adequate time to adjust and become comfortable. Once he's comfortable, he's a playful goof.
If yes, does your foster need another dog in its adoptive home? No, he'd be perfectly happy as an only dog.
Cat Friendly? So-so. He wants to chase them when they run, but has met them politely otherwise. Dog-savvy cats and continued lessons in manners are recommended.
Kid Friendly: Unsure
If yes, what's the youngest child you'd recommend they be placed with? Older children due to his size and puppyish nature.
Traits that make your foster special or that we need to know about them?
Quint is one of the Georgia GARD dogs, and he was found in a yard on the property with two other dogs. I don't know how long he lived in that yard, but leaving it seemed to trigger his anxiety. He's had to learn freedom and life outside that fence almost from the ground up, and while he's come a long way, there's still work to be done.
When Quint gets anxious, you'll know. His go-to is jumping up and clinging to me for reassurance, or trying to sound loud to make the Scary Thing go away. He's gotten much better about it, and has become a lot more eager and excited about new experiences, but there are still times when his insecurities rear their heads.
The best home for Quint will be someone who is understanding of his quirks and willing to work through them with him. He'd love an active family as well, once he's cleared from his heartworm treatments. If you're looking for a sweet-natured boy who tries his best every day, then Quint's your guy. I promise you'll love him - it's too hard not to.
