Name: Blackie
Breed: Lab Mix
Age: 5 years
Sex: Female
Weight: 60lbs
Medical Needs:
Blackie is HW+ and will require treatment that is covered by Grass Roots Rescue.
Treatment will consist of 2 back to back appointments with a follow up appointment for recheck 6 months later. These appointments will be at Avenue Vet in Milford. Because of this, foster to adopt family will need to live within one hour of Milford and be willing to travel there for her appointments.
Blackie also has acid reflux that is managed with medication 2x daily. This may or may not resolve once heartworm treatment is complete. The monthly cost for this medication is $6.
Housebroken: Yes! No accidents in the house or crate. She goes to the door when she needs to go out.
Crate Trained: Yes.
Good in the car: Yes but I recommend tethering her or she would prefer to be in your lap.
Good on Leash: She walks beautifully on a leash with a prong collar. Without it, she gets excited and pulls.
Energy Level: Typical lab energy. Go! Go! Go!
Need fenced yard: Not necessary but would love one to burn off energy and play fetch.
Dog Friendly: Yes with furrriends that are her size or larger with slow introductions. Although she seems to be indifferent to their presence. She is more interested in people and toys.
If yes, does she need another dog in the home: No.
Cat Friendly: Unknown. However, she watches feral cats in my neighborhood intently. I would not recommend a home with cats.
Kid Friendly: Yes. She is fostered with a 9 year old.
If yes, what age: Any with supervision. She does jump and it is very gentle (like a hug) but due to her size she could easily knock over a little.
Special traits that others should know:
Blackie came from a Georgia “Rescue” whose founder and director was charged with aggravated animal cruelty. She lived for years in an outdoor run in horrendous conditions. Although her past was terrible, her future is bright. She LOVES people! She is super smart! In two short weeks, she learned 4 new commands (sit, wait, kennel, and off), how to walk on a leash and is slowly learning that she can relax in a home environment because she is safe. She needs a family who will understand her cues when she is overstimulated and will give her space to “reset” as needed as she adjusts to life indoors. She is generally quiet unless she hears an unfamiliar, startling sound (not a fan of trash trucks). In Blackie’s world balls are life! She lives and breathes to play fetch. Not only does she bring it back but she drops it right at your feet or in your hand. Blackie is crate trained and sleeps and eats in her crate. No accidents in her crate or in the house. She is gentle natured, takes treats softly, and is the sweetest snuggler once you earn her trust.
Fosters location: Milford, DE.
