Hi there, my name is Kirby! I am a cute little Goffin's cockatoo looking for my forever home. I came to the SPCA after some nice people found me as a stray. I am shy and a little unsure of the world right now, so it might take me awhile to get comfortable in a new place. I am looking for someone who will be gentle and patient with me. I would do best in a home with someone who has experience with large exotic birds and is able to provide me with a nice big cage. Do I sound like the right fit for you? Schedule an appointment to meet me soon!
Goffin's cockatoos are intelligent, active, and fun-loving birds that require a lot of care and attention. It is important that when committing to taking care of an exotic bird for the entirety of its life that you are prepared for that commitment. The lifespan of a Goffin's cockatoo can be up to 30+ years with proper care. Exotic birds require annual vet exams much like a dog or cat. The Goffin's cockatoo has a reputation as a "quieter cockatoo," however, that's not to say that a Goffin's won't screech, especially if he wants your attention. A Goffin's cockatoo needs a spacious cage that should have perches at different heights. Your cockatoo should have at least three to four hours of supervised time outside of its cage each day. You can use a play stand for your cockatoo to play with toys, climb, and eat. You should provide a variety of toys that challenge your cockatoo, such as puzzle toys, rope toys, and toys that can be taken apart. You can also hide toys or treats for your cockatoo to find. Food for cockatoos should be nutritious, but should also include a foraging element as well.
If you would like to meet Kirby, or any of our adoptable exotic birds here at the SPCA please complete the SPCA exotic pet adoption application and our Wildlife staff will contact you to set up an appointment. Four simple steps to adopt a pet
1. Visit the SPCA at 1002 Monterey-Salinas Highway across from WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca. Visit with the pet you are interested in adopting to see if his personality fits your lifestyle.
2. If you are adopting a new dog and already have one at home, you will need to introduce them at the SPCA to ensure a good match. When adopting, please bring your current dog with you. Our animal care staff will assist you with introducing your current dog to the dog you are hoping to adopt. We also prefer when possible that all family members living in the home meet any new pet before adopting.
3. The SPCA adoption process takes approximately 20-30 minutes to complete. All paperwork, vaccination records, and microchip information will be provided at this time.
4. Take your new lifelong family member home!
We understand that sometimes potential adopters are at work or school, coming from long distances, or need time to gather pets and family together to meet their potential new adoptee. Because of this, the SPCA offers a 24 hour hold on adoptable pets.
Holds cost $30 for a 24 hour period.
