My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website.

Hello,

Meet the handsome, fun, sweet youngster Wolverine!
This guy is so happy to be out of animal control and absolutely thriving being part of a family. We recently had a gathering, and he was a wonderful co-host, loving every dog and human he got to meet. We had no information on how he would do with cats and worried for nothing. He wants to run up and say hello but a “leave it” from a person or a hiss from a cat is all the redirection he needs to move on, fairly uninterested overall.

We have two small kids (under 4) at home and my only real concern is when he is playing with our other young dog in the living room as they would knock them over. He is very gentle when they want to play, pet, or give treats and often tries to sneak up on the couch to snuggle with them while watching cartoons.  He is not a chewer, but when he grabs a kid toy left on the ground by accident, he gives it up without a fuss. No resource guarding of any kind.

He is one of the smartest dogs I have had in a very long time. He knew no commands when we picked him up. Since then, he has accomplished great recall, sit, stay, come, down, shake, kennel up, and go lay down (in his “spot” at the house). He would be amazing for someone who enjoys training and could teach him some cool tricks.

He had been mostly going to the bathroom inside his kennel and had no concept of needing to go outside. Since then, has had only one accident in the last few days, after he understood what we wanted. We are hoping he will start learning how to let us know when he needs to go, but for now he is doing great with regular potty breaks.

He has the pretty classic aussie characteristics that may get overwhelming for some dogs. He takes social cues from our older dogs to leave them alone when they need space, but our younger dog sets no boundaries, and he wants to play play play. With exercise and engagement, he is calm, funny, and sweet to be around. He is occasionally vocal to communicate but not generally loud. If he is crouched down to play and you run past him you will get herded by a nip in the heel. He does not have a mean bone in his body, he is just shepherd of some sort and it is what they do. He would be great fit for anybody or family with an active lifestyle, he wants to be involved with everything!

He is a big fan of ice cubes and comes running when he hears the fridge dispenser. He wants to be where you are and is a shameless snuggle bug at any chance he gets. He is truly a diamond in the rough and he is going to make someone such a fun and loyal companion.

Go meet their pets

Ruff Start Rescue is a foster-based rescue, meaning no animals are available at the Princeton, MN office for public viewing or adoption. All animals in our care reside in foster homes with few special exceptions for our adoption center animals, who are housed at our partnering facilities temporarily before adoption. To meet a Ruff Starter you may be interested in adopting, please submit an adoption application on our website.

More about this rescue

Ruff Start Rescue is a foster-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit companion animal rescue that primarily serves communities throughout the state of Minnesota, as well as states in the south with severe pet overpopulation. We rescue stray, neglected, abandoned, and surrendered dogs and cats as well as ferrets, guinea pigs, rabbits, and other critters. Most of our work is accomplished by a complex network of volunteers, fosters, and supporters, all of whom come together to save thousands of animals each year.

Since our inception, we’ve firmly believed that a home is usually a far more desirable environment than a shelter or a kennel for most companion animals in need of a forever family. As a result, we rely nearly exclusively on volunteers to provide foster homes for rescued pets until they find their adoptive homes. Please note: this means no animals are available at our facility for public viewing.

Each pet in our care is provided with routine vaccinations, spay/neuter procedures, microchipped, given internal and external parasite preventatives, and tested for common bloodborne pathogens such as heartworm and feline leukemia. Advanced veterinary care is provided to any animal that requires such services before adoption.

If you are interested in fostering, adopting, or volunteering, please fill out an applicable application at our website: www.ruffstartrescue.org.
