My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Axel is a 12-week-old Collie/Shepherd/Retriever mix with a sweet and bright personality! At 20 pounds, he’s an energetic little guy during the day, loving playtime with the rest of the pack. At night, he’s also happy to wind down with cuddles and a good TV show. His fun, laid-back demeanor makes him a well-balanced pup who’s ready for adventure and snuggles alike.

At home, Axel is catching on quickly to house training and will thrive with consistency and a regular routine. Crate training is still a work in progress, but he’s making steady improvements. When it’s mealtime, Axel’s excitement is contagious—he bounces and hops like a little bunny, bringing a smile to everyone around him! While he does whine when he needs to go outside, he isn’t overly vocal and adjusts well to changes in routine. He should be able to live in homes with shared walls (apartments/townhomes) just fine, making him adaptable to various living environments.

Axel is a friendly pup so far, especially when playing with his siblings! He has no trouble with other dogs in the neighborhood either. He hasn’t been introduced to cats or kids yet, but his sweet demeanor suggests he would make a wonderful family dog.

Axel’s energy level is typical for a puppy his age, enjoying active play during the day and relaxing when it’s time to settle down. While a fenced yard isn’t required, he currently enjoys access to one, giving him space to explore and run. He loves blankets and playing with all kinds of puppy toys, and his bursts of joyful energy are always entertaining.

If you’re looking for a cuddly, lively puppy who loves to have fun and share quiet evenings, Axel is the perfect companion to bring joy to your family!

The adoption fee is $550. Adoption fee includes spay/neuter, heartworm/Lyme test, all age-appropriate vaccinations (distemper, rabies, and Bordetella), heartworm and flea/tick preventatives, and microchip implant (including registration). Adoption fees INCLUDE a mandatory sales tax of 7.525%. Age and breed are based on veterinarian and intake professional’s recommendation and not guaranteed as a rescue animal’s history is often unknown. Due to post-adoption services provided, we prefer to adopt within a 150-mile radius of the Twin Cities. However, we will consider up to 250 miles if the foster agrees to travel requirements and staff approval.

Additional adoption info

Pet Haven is a foster-based rescue. Our animals live with foster families until they are placed in permanent homes and their foster families get to know the dogs and cats learning important information about the animals. For example, the foster family will know if the dog or cat is good with other animals or children, and will have a good idea of what kind of training, attention, and special needs the pet may require. This makes our foster families great resources for potential adopters!

More about this rescue

Our Mission
Pet Haven improves the lives of pets and the people who love them by rescuing, rehabilitating, and rehoming dogs and cats; reducing pet overpopulation by supporting spay and neuter efforts, and providing resources to people that help strengthen the human-animal bond.

Our Vision
A Minnesota where all pets live in safe, loving homes.

Our Values
Excellence in service and care; community; integrity; innovation; perseverance; compassion; a rewarding place to volunteer

How We Help
Spay/Neuter Initiative Program: Providing support to end pet overpopulation in Minnesota
Owner Surrender: Providing a safe haven for pet owners
Foster: Committed to finding forever homes for cats and dogs
Phoenix Fund for Special Needs: Providing veterinary care for animals in need of healing
What We Do
We help dogs and cats find homes with loving families through foster-based care. Every dog and cat lives with a foster family until they find their forever families. We provide all of their basic needs including proper food, veterinary care, behavior training, and supplies.

Through in-home fostering, we learn about each animal’s temperament, personality, likes/dislikes, and any medical needs. With this first-hand information, we can then find the right family for each dog and cat.

Our volunteers also educate the public on responsible companion animal care and represent respect for animals at all times. Whether we’re working with prospective new families, meeting people at public events, or socializing with friends and family, we encourage others to view and treat their pets as members of the family. We are their guardians, and they depend on us for companionship and care.

We spay/neuter prior to adoption.
We microchip all our Pet Haven Pets and remain as a secondary contact.
We make sure all pets are up to date on required vaccinations
We test for Heartworm and Lymes in all our dogs and are transparent in the results and treament
We test for FeLV/FIV and are transparent in the results. We believe that cats who test positive still deserve a chance at a quality home.
We do not euthanize animals unless they have untreatable health or behavioral conditions that deny them an acceptable quality of life or makes them a serious threat to people, other animals, or themselves.
How We Operate
We rely on adoption fees, tax-deductible donations, grants, and special events to keep our rescue operating. Our staff, Board of Directors, and volunteers have provided the passion and commitment to keep Pet Haven a safe haven for animals for almost 70 years.

We are committed to preventing pet homelessness through the SNIP Grant. Since 2005, we have granted more than $240,000 to organizations in Minnesota to support spay/neuter initiatives.
