My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Silas is an 11-week-old Shepherd mix who is full of puppy energy and charm! At 14.5 pounds, his fun personality and gentle nature make him the perfect balance of playful and cuddly. This little guy loves playing with his foster sibling, exploring the yard, and curling up with his favorite teddy bear for naps. He's also sure to win you over by sitting down, tilting his head, and staring at you with his floppy ears bouncing around, making him absolutely irresistible.

Silas is still learning how to behave at home, but is well on his way to being house-trained with consistent outdoor potty breaks and a regular routine. He goes outside like a champ! With consistency and patience, he is sure to potty train quickly. He is great at commands like "sit" and "shake" now. He’s also loving his crate time and enjoys sleeping in his crate without whining, so training has been a breeze!

While Silas does not have experience with dogs outside the home, he's getting along swimmingly with his current roommates. He loves playing with his other foster sibling and older resident dog, getting super excited and wagging his tail when he sees them! Sometimes he follows the resident dog around the backyard, learning quickly by copying his every move. While Silas hasn’t met kids yet, his sweet and gentle demeanor suggests he’d do well with them. He’s also had positive interactions with cats in his foster home, following them curiously but showing no aggression.

Though Silas is still too young for walks, he loves having space to explore and play, so a yard is recommended until he’s old enough to safely venture out. He’s a Shepherd mix, which means he’ll need lots of exercise and mental stimulation as he grows. Right now, he's been known to run through the cat tunnel—though he might outgrow that pastime soon!

Silas is currently receiving treatment for an ulcer on his left eye, but it doesn’t slow him down one bit! His expressions are even more endearing because of it, and his healing journey hasn’t dimmed his bright personality.

If you’re looking for a playful, cuddly companion with a touch of gentle sweetness, Silas is ready to join your family and fill your days with love and laughter. Don’t wait—this little guy won’t be available for long!

The adoption fee is $550. Adoption fee includes spay/neuter, heartworm/Lyme test, all age-appropriate vaccinations (distemper, rabies, and Bordetella), heartworm and flea/tick preventatives, and microchip implant (including registration). Adoption fees INCLUDE a mandatory sales tax of 7.525%. Age and breed are based on veterinarian and intake professional’s recommendation and not guaranteed as a rescue animal’s history is often unknown. Due to post-adoption services provided, we prefer to adopt within a 150-mile radius of the Twin Cities. However, we will consider up to 250 miles if the foster agrees to travel requirements and staff approval.

Additional adoption info

Pet Haven is a foster-based rescue. Our animals live with foster families until they are placed in permanent homes and their foster families get to know the dogs and cats learning important information about the animals. For example, the foster family will know if the dog or cat is good with other animals or children, and will have a good idea of what kind of training, attention, and special needs the pet may require. This makes our foster families great resources for potential adopters!

More about this rescue

Our Mission
Pet Haven improves the lives of pets and the people who love them by rescuing, rehabilitating, and rehoming dogs and cats; reducing pet overpopulation by supporting spay and neuter efforts, and providing resources to people that help strengthen the human-animal bond.

Our Vision
A Minnesota where all pets live in safe, loving homes.

Our Values
Excellence in service and care; community; integrity; innovation; perseverance; compassion; a rewarding place to volunteer

How We Help
Spay/Neuter Initiative Program: Providing support to end pet overpopulation in Minnesota
Owner Surrender: Providing a safe haven for pet owners
Foster: Committed to finding forever homes for cats and dogs
Phoenix Fund for Special Needs: Providing veterinary care for animals in need of healing
What We Do
We help dogs and cats find homes with loving families through foster-based care. Every dog and cat lives with a foster family until they find their forever families. We provide all of their basic needs including proper food, veterinary care, behavior training, and supplies.

Through in-home fostering, we learn about each animal’s temperament, personality, likes/dislikes, and any medical needs. With this first-hand information, we can then find the right family for each dog and cat.

Our volunteers also educate the public on responsible companion animal care and represent respect for animals at all times. Whether we’re working with prospective new families, meeting people at public events, or socializing with friends and family, we encourage others to view and treat their pets as members of the family. We are their guardians, and they depend on us for companionship and care.

We spay/neuter prior to adoption.
We microchip all our Pet Haven Pets and remain as a secondary contact.
We make sure all pets are up to date on required vaccinations
We test for Heartworm and Lymes in all our dogs and are transparent in the results and treament
We test for FeLV/FIV and are transparent in the results. We believe that cats who test positive still deserve a chance at a quality home.
We do not euthanize animals unless they have untreatable health or behavioral conditions that deny them an acceptable quality of life or makes them a serious threat to people, other animals, or themselves.
How We Operate
We rely on adoption fees, tax-deductible donations, grants, and special events to keep our rescue operating. Our staff, Board of Directors, and volunteers have provided the passion and commitment to keep Pet Haven a safe haven for animals for almost 70 years.

We are committed to preventing pet homelessness through the SNIP Grant. Since 2005, we have granted more than $240,000 to organizations in Minnesota to support spay/neuter initiatives.
